V-50 Head Close-up
V5 Mast Close-up

Harry Neumaier of Munich, Germany, always takes a cautious approach.  After reporting his very positive initial impression of the V5, Harry now goes on to say that he thought some more - realizing, as he put it,  "I was impressed by the V5, but, you can be easily impressed by something new - something that seems 'great, different - cute'.

But, after using something for a while, you can get used to that new thing and you begin to question if it is really the great thing that it first seemed to be."  Harry continued... "What concerned me was a doubt about the new faster Leadscrew: would it be accurate enough for small corrections?  It doubles adjusting speed, a great improvement (very good for all designs where you have to change angles  or for switching from Pavillion to Girdle and back again).

Now - with repeated use - I've confirmed that the V5 leadscrew is very (!) capable of small changes in vertical position.  In combination with the enlarged Vertical Knob, the leadscrew provides a very fine adjustment.  So yes, the new V5 mast is a great thing, even after the first excitement is gone".

Harry added to the Ultra Tec crew:  "Well done."  Harry, we thank you!

Summer Planning - Gem Safari in Tanzania
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are a few things to think about:
Gem Safari in Tanzania - July 4-21st
This could be you, with new friends and companions - gem cutters all - on your way to the mines in the beautiful UMBA VALLEY of Tanzania.  You will have privileged access to the mines, and the gem rough you find will be yours to keep!  Imagine those smiles!
This would be an unforgettable trip.
The Franklin Faceters Frolic ...FFF 5.0...in Franklin, NC
The Franklin Faceter's Frolic 5.0 is is around the corner - coming up on July 26 and 27.  On the Frolic's lead-off day, Friday, 9AM to 12AM, Bob Strickland will conduct a Beginning GemCad Workshop.  After lunch, 1PM to 4PM, Bob will conduct an Intermediate/Advanced Gemcad Workshop.  It's a chance to learn from the program developer himself!   And, icing on the cake, on Saturday, Bob Strickland will discuss and show his NEW GemRay design optimizer.
See the V5 - see the Fantasy!
If you haven't seen the latest Ultra Tec equipment, this show will be your opportunity to get an up-close look at both the Ultra Tec V5 Faceting Machine and the Ultra Tec Fantasy Machine.  Speak to Tom Maxwell of Beckham's Barn who will be displaying the Ultra Tec equipment.  Tom will be joined by Hal Hume (whom you may remember from FFF4) - so there will be two experts to talk to and answer questions - both of them, Tom (on the left) and Hal (on the right), are highly knowledgeable "straight talkers".
More than incidentally, Tom will be offering some nice gem rough for you to consider.
Introducing.... A New Representative...
Jim Tovey
Jim Tovey
 We Welcome...... Jim Tovey
 ... New Hampshire
Welcome to Jim Tovey of New Hampshire.  Jim is a native of Francestown.
An avid do-it-yourselfer, Jim built the timber-frame home in which he and his wife Joanne have lived for the past 29 years - together, they have shared an interest in lapidary and gem cutting.
Now, for most of you, getting gem rough is a chore.  Jim solved that by owning the mine.  His company, Toveco, owns and operates several mines in New Hampshire, and in particular the Tripp mine which has been producing Beryl, Aquamarine, Garnet, as well as Quartz materials - and, as you might imagine, with a number of the mine workers have come to share Jim's interest in gem cutting.
