T. Boone Pickens visiting IU Bloomington to discuss 'America's Foreign Oil Dependency Crisis' Sept. 18

T. Boone Pickens, one of America's most successful businessmen and the founder of an ambitious, self-funded grassroots campaign aimed at reducing the nation's dependence on imported oil, will speak at Indiana University Bloomington on Sept. 18 at 10 a.m.

Pickens will be a guest of IU's Kelley School of Business and will speak to university students, faculty and guests at IU Auditorium, 1211 E. Seventh St. He also will meet with reporters beforehand. IU President Michael A. McRobbie will introduce Pickens. The title of his speech will be "America's Foreign Oil Dependency Crisis."

Pickens' speech will be presented live on the Internet at http://www.broadcast.iu.edu. An archived videostream of the speech will be available online by Sept. 22.

"Mr. Pickens has accumulated an interesting set of facts related to sustainability and our nation's dependence on petroleum as well as feasible alternatives to fossil fuels as an energy source," said Dan Smith, dean of the Kelley School of Business. "I have read a number of essays by Mr. Pickens on this topic and am certain that this will be an extremely interesting and thought-provoking event."

For four decades, Pickens led Mesa Petroleum, an independent oil company that he founded in 1956, which went on to become one of the nation's largest and most well known independent oil exploration and production companies.

He subsequently became one of the most successful investment fund operators with BP Capital Management, which is valued at more than $4 billion and is principally responsible for the formulation of the energy futures investment strategy of the BP Capital Commodity Fund and the BP Capital Equity Fund.

The Holdenville, Okla., native also aggressively pursues a wide range of other business interests, from water marketing and ranch development initiatives to Clean Energy, a company he founded (he is also the company's largest shareholder). Through Mesa Water, Pickens is the largest private holder of permitted groundwater rights in the United States. Clean Energy is advancing the use of natural gas as a cleaner-burning and more cost-effective transportation fuel alternative to gasoline and diesel.

In 2008, Pickens launched a $58 million national advertising campaign to promote his energy plan, which also promotes building new wind generation facilities to produce 20 percent of America's electricity and using its domestic natural gas supply as transportation and power generation fuels. More information about the Pickens Plan is available at http://www.pickensplan.com/.

Coined by CNBC as the "Oracle of Oil, " Pickens also is the author of several books, including a 2008 New York Times bestseller, The First Billion is the Hardest, in which he details what America must do to win back its energy independence. The book will be released as a paperback on Sept. 9.

His many professional honors include membership in the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, the Texas Business Hall of Fame and the Oklahoma Hall of Fame. In 1998, Oil & Gas Investor listed him as one of the "100 Most Influential People of the Petroleum Century." He was named one of world's 100 most influential people in 2009 by Time magazine.

SEPA to offer Feed-in Tariff Design: Lessons Learned" webinar on 9/15

Feed-in tariffs (FITs) are emerging as an alternative to cash rebate programs for a variety of reasons. As the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) recently learned on a fact-finding mission to Spain, they can significantly expand a market rapidly, but at the same time cause problems or concerns depending on their structure. Many of these programs have then adjusted their approach after the initial roll-out in both minor and major ways. This webinar will feature perspectives from Ed Regan of Gainesville Regional Utilities-a Florida utility that gained significant attention with the start of their FIT program, and Julia Hamm, SEPA's Executive Director, who traveled to Spain and learned about the boom and bust cycle that occurred there.  Attend this webinar as our speakers answer the question, "What should you do differently?"  The webinar is free to SEPA Members and Media.  Fee for others:  $125.

Date: Tuesday, September 15, 11 am Pacific; 2 pm Eastern. One hour duration
Speakers: Ed Regan, Gainesville Regional Utilities & Julia Hamm, Solar Electric Power Association
Cost: Free to SEPA Members and Media (Enter SEPA for code/subject to verification; $125 Non-members)
Target Audience: Power supply and planning; rates, finance and regulatory; renewable project manager

Energy Efficiency Improvements to Waxman-Markey Could Create 569,000 Jobs, Save Households $283 Annually in Ten Years

Washington, D.C. (September 9, 2009):  Energy efficiency provisions in the American Clean Energy Security Act (ACES - H.R. 2454) with improvements could create more than 569,00 new jobs nationwide in the next ten years and provide $283 in annual savings for every  household in America, according to a new study released today by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).  By 2030, these benefits could increase to more than one million jobs and $832 in annual savings per household - all while reducing government-projected levels of nationwide carbon emissions by 15 percent, or 959 million metric tons.

The new report, "Energy Efficiency in the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009: Impacts of Current Provisions and Opportunities to Enhance the Legislation," underscores the energy efficiency potential - and accompanying benefits - still available as the Senate considers energy and climate legislation. In fact, the examined improvements would result in 48 percent more jobs and 32 percent more consumer savings than the 383,800 jobs and $215 in annual household savings in 2020 than the energy efficiency provisions of ACES, the original House bill, would provide.

"Energy efficiency may not be as hot a topic as cap-and-trade, but it certainly gets the job done when it comes to saving consumers money and creating jobs," stated Steven Nadel, ACEEE's Executive Director and co-author of the report. "As our report shows, the Senate can boost those benefits by improving the energy efficiency provisions of the Waxman-Markey bill."

These improvements would bring economic and environmental benefits to every state in the country. State results of the ACEEE study were released at over forty-five nationwide events organized by Environment America and a broad network of businesses, faith and community leaders, and clean energy advocates.

See state-by-state breakdowns at http://www.aceee.org/energy/national/50states.htm

"We are one of a growing number of companies who recognize that energy efficiency means more jobs, lower costs, reduced emissions, and competitive advantage.  Efficiency can bring economic benefits to every community in America - and we're proud to work with ACEEE to tap into that incredible potential," said Mark Wagner, Vice President of Johnson Controls, Inc.

Improvements to ACES considered in ACEEE's analysis are:

*Strengthening the Energy Efficiency Resource Standard (EERS) that sets a 10% energy savings goal for electric utility companies. (ACES includes a 5% EERS with an optional 3% increase.)
*Requiring one-third of the electric utility allowances to be used for energy efficiency improvements as are the natural gas allowances in ACES.
*Extending the allocation of 9.5% of carbon allowance revenue to the State Energy and Environmental Development (SEED) fund to 2030. (ACESA ramps down SEED fund spending beginning in 2016.)

"These cost-effective improvements would accelerate the energy efficiency benefits of the bill by a decade, bringing big savings to American families and businesses," concluded Suzanne Watson, ACEEE's Policy Director.

While this study did not consider the impact on consumers of the cap-and-trade provisions in ACES, the annual household consumer savings from the energy efficiency provisions analyzed in the study would more than offset EPA's projected consumer cost of the cap-and-trade provisions in ACES, bringing net savings to Americans.
