Message From the Executive Director

Page-Lake Powell Greetings!

Happy Holidays! And we are all asking ourselves "What happened to the year?"

Well the Chamber has had a busy year! There was the Annual Board Retreat at Antelope Point Marina, the Annual Awards Banquet and the Best of Page in March, the luncheon for U.S. Representative Ann Kirkpatrick, the Page/Lake Powell Cruisin' Car Show in May, Fourth of July Parade and Celebration in the City Park, Balloon Regatta Vendor Fair, and now the Holiday Mixer and Holiday Home Tours & Sees Candy Fundraiser to finish out the year.

In order to produce some of these events, we changed how we do business. The Chamber contracts with the City of Page's insurance carrier to cover the vendors insurance for our events. We pay a bit more, but we are able to have more vendors and activities for all!

We also celebrated several ribbon cuttings this year, BeeHive Homes and Norgren Insurance & Financial Team. This is always a blessing in today's economic times.

I can't forget our great host businesses this year for our memorable mixers; Coconino Community College, The Canyon King Pizzeria, Page Hospital, The Point, Cowboy-In, Page Electric Utility, Los Delfines Mexican Family Restaurant, Basic Development - Toroweap Townhomes, and Ranch House Grille (tonight).

Judy Edwards and her team have set up a fantastic line-up of homes and businesses for the Holiday Home Tour this year. We received our order of Sees Candy today, and will have some for sale at the Holiday Mixer at the Ranch House Grille. The proceeds from the tour and candy sales fund the Chamber's Scholarship Fund.

Tickets are now available for the Concert Assocation's
third concert of the season, "Connor Chee" on the 10th. Call our office for more information.

It is that time of the year when we ask our members to seek election for our Board of Directors. We  have 4 positions available this year. We have 3 members interested, please contact our office if you want to be a part of our team. Ballots will go out early next week (hopefully).

We wish you and your families a very safe and
Happy Holiday Season!

Tis the Season
Does anybody else watch the Hallmark Channel this time of year?  They have one Christmas movie after another - 24 hours a day, from the Thanksgiving weekend thru Christmas.  I'm guilty of watching one or so a week.   The themes are "feel good" through and through.  They may be somewhat repetitive and some of the acting is hard to watch, but it's refreshing to see a positive, down home message.  They all embody a certain spirit of giving; a spirit of family; a spirit of community.  Lots of "Small Town" stuff.  I turn them off when the business people are the bad guys - that one was worn out with Scrooge and anyone in the Chamber of Commerce knows better.  But I'm reminded of a kind of giving that Chamber members are equipped for:  Mentoring.

My philosophy has always been that Page businesses are remarkably interconnected.  We can all be viewed as competitors for a finite consumer dollar, but in a larger way we are all together, striving to keep more consumer spending here in Page rather than sending it out of town.  As more and more needs are met here, and more money is spent here, all local businesses do a little better.  We have some very successful enterprises here in town.  We have some retired "Moguls".  What could a little Merry Christmas Mentoring do for some struggling businesses?  Could they use some marketing advice?  A little help with their product mix?  Customer service coaching?  Bookkeeping answers?  Our town can be an attraction all by itself and commerce can make the difference.  I would invite any of you who may be exposed to obvious shortfalls in a given business to extend your hand, say a Merry Christmas, and just add: "If I can ever give you any help with anything of a business nature, let me know."  It might turn into a Hallmark moment.
