Message From the Executive Director

Page-Lake Powell Greetings!

Happy Thanksgiving. Yes it is November and the holidays are just around the corner. And it is Balloon Regatta Week in Page. The Chamber is not having a mixer this month. The 8th Annual Page - Lake Powell Hot Air Balloon Regatta and Vendor Fair has our full focus this week. I have included the schedule of events in this newsletter.

Page has lots of shopping opportunities this month with Christmas in November, Lake Powell Church of the Nazarene Craft Sale, and the Balloon Regatta Vendor Fair, all on Saturday the 6th. Then after enjoying a wonderful holiday meal with family on Thanksgiving Day, we have Black Friday Shopping.  I personally look forward to this day.

Tickets are now available for Life's A Ball and the Concert Assocation's second concert of the season, "James Bilagody and the Spirit Eagle Dancers" on the 19th. Call our office for more information.

Judy Edwards is asking for homes to be featured in our annual Holiday Home Tours. The proceeds from the tour funds the Chamber's Scholarship Fund.

It is that time of the year when we ask our members to seek election for our Board of Directors. We  have 4 positions
available this year. Please contact our office if you are interested.

Sometimes upgrades to computer programs can cause havoc for the users. This is the case this week with this email/newsletter program, hence the delay in getting this to you. I have decided to let it "win" and not include events after the 17th. The Weekly Blasts will have all updated information.

Hope to see you at the Balloon Regatta, Free Concert, Vendor Fair, Christmas in November, Life's a Ball....

Creative Destruction

I learned how to type on an actual typewriter.  It wasn't electric.  I have a Polaroid camera somewhere in the garage - probably in a box with the 8-track tapes and the VCR.  I used to have to tune-up my car every so often.  My telephone had a dial on it, and we had a black and white television.  You get the idea.  Innovation has been proceeding at a pace that boggles the mind.  Along the way, there has been displacement, unemployment and devaluation in many areas.  But as much as anything, there has been opportunity.

Here in Page, we've seen changes.  I used to go to the Yellow Front, the Hallmark Store, the Dairy Queen, and Jones Drug among a long list of others that are no longer here.  There is now a general shift from the mesa to Hwy 89.  Good for some, bad for others.

There are commercial vacancies in town that have been vacant for a long time.  There are businesses that we have needed for a long time.  What kinds of ideas are stimulated by this situation in the mind of the entrepreneur?  I had a friend in the real estate business once tell me to make as many ridiculous offers to landlords and owners as I could come up with because "one of them might be accepted".  The simultaneous beauty and tragedy of capitalism is in the constant change.  The saving grace is that no one is confined to either success or failure.  Every day that you don't explore clouds in search of a silver lining or brainstorm ideas with like-minded, entrepreneurial people, might be a day of wasted opportunity.

I have to go now - there are 500 million people waiting for me on Facebook.
