Message From the Executive Director

Page-Lake Powell Greetings!

I hope you were able to attend the Page/Lake Powell Cruisin show in the City Park. We had 57 entries and saw about 2500 people milling around throughout the day. It was pretty neat to see tour buses dropping off their passengers throughout the day.

We want to thank everyone for taking the time to fill out our survey. This was our first attempt, and we had 75 returned out of 335 sent. A 22.3% return, not bad...

 Now in Page
  Entertainment Business?!

I used to ask my employees a question.  It seemed like kind of a goofy question to them.  I would ask:  "What business are we in?"  Most of them thought I was kidding.  The kind of business we were in was obvious.  A restaurant.  A bookstore.  A tour business.

But I would always say "Nope - wrong answer."  I'm sure they feared for my sanity at that point.  None of them ever got the "right" answer.  Finally, having their attention, I would seize the opportunity to tell them what kind of business I really thought we were in.  I told them that we were in the entertainment business.  I told them that our goal was to provide a little entertainment to every customer who came in the door.   It may just be eye contact, a winning smile and product knowledge delivered in an interesting way.  It may be a little joke.  It may be the remembrance of their name or their usual order.  Maybe we would ask their opinion on something current.  Ideally, the normal performance of their job would include a little flair.

I first encountered this philosophy when I did some work at Disneyland.  They had no employees - only cast members.  Instead of "employees only" on back room doors, they had "Cast Members only".  Everyone was playing a role.  It was a lesson that I've never forgotten.

If the customer gets a little unexpected treatment or is made to feel good about the otherwise mundane trip to a given business, they will be more likely to come back again and again.  That translates into more sales.  It also translates into raises and job security for employees.  Some of your employees will capture the entertainment vision.  Some won't.  But it's worth a try.  Get into the entertainment business!
