Goal Setting
Are you comfortable? Are you too comfortable? Is comfort a good thing for a business? There is advice out there that says you can grow or perish.
There is no "stay the same" pathway to success. What do you think? We all have a tendency to become creatures of routine. It takes a great deal of effort to start a business and build it to the point where comfort is even remotely possible.
80% of business startups fail after just a few years. If you are in the 20%, you deserve a little comfort. Only a tiny fraction of business startups go on to achieve an annual sales level of a million dollars. If you are in that club, comfort is more realistic. But is it ever wise?
I was talking to a business owner recently who had been chugging along for several years and who, by any standard, was a success - his business was a success. For a variety of reasons, however, he was interested in selling. Unfortunately, the business as he had been operating it would not bring a figure that would allow him to do what he wanted. He had to grow. He had to add value to the business. His goals, historically, had been to keep what he had. Growth never really entered into the picture. He had to change his whole mind set and point the business plan toward growth.
The most interesting thing he said to me was that simply by setting a new goal, he started to figure out ways to achieve it. When all he had in mind was maintaining what he had, that was all he achieved. When growth to a certain level became his goal, a new energy and excitement took over. He was a renewed entrepreneur. And he reached his goal and sold his business. For all I know he's on a yacht in the Bahamas as we speak. What do you think?
