Going it Alone When I started in business, I made my share of mistakes. I had some good ideas - maybe even great ideas. I had business plans. I had financial and accounting skills. Marketing seemed like it should be easy. I had a grasp of the big picture. I had confidence that I could get along with employees and customers. I also had a feeling that I had to do everything by myself. I wanted to do everything all by myself. My business goals and achievements would be somehow diminished if I involved anyone else. There were also feelings of secrecy and privacy that lurked within me. I felt protective of my own thoughts and actions. This was, after all, my business. So off I went on not-so-great one-man ventures. I soon learned that I was falling short in some of the areas that I thought I had a handle on. Many of my plans crashed on the rocks of reality or just slowly faded away, never having really failed, but never succeeding enough to really supply a significant income. Every effort taught me something, and I improved as I went, but it was a long and lonely road. Looking back, I realize how much I didn't know when I started out. I could have used some help. Some of you may recognize these tendencies in yourself. I've run into several people who amaze me with their willingness to reach out for help. I wish I had been more like that. Others I meet remind me of my earlier reticence. Let me encourage you to involve someone else in your business plans. I think everyone can benefit from just a simple conversation wherein some doubts or fears can be let out into the open. Sometimes it helps just to know you aren't the only one who is facing a particular set of challenges. Sometimes a little confirmation that you are on the right track can make a huge difference! The SBDC can happily fill the role of sounding board and confidant. Two heads are truly better than one.
Going it alone may be educational but it isn't always immediately profitable. Hope to see you soon. Jim Hunter Small Business Development Center

*************************************************************** Dear Page Community Supporter:
The Business Club at Page High School is making plans for the 2nd Annual Sand Devil 5K Road Race. The success of this event will be credited largely to our sponsors, who lend their names and financial support to the event. The vision behind this event is to provide high school business students real-world experience with all aspects of planning, organizing, and operating a business or event while promoting physical fitness and community involvement. The money generated by this event will go toward a local charity and to the PHS Business Club. What a great way to encourage and support the youth of Page! The event is set for Saturday, May 1st, 2010 and begins at 9:00 a.m. A website has been created at (sites.google.com/site/sanddevil5krace) to promote the event and sponsors such as you as well as to provide more detailed information. However, true success of any race rests with word of mouth. It is for this reason we hope you will encourage those around you to participate, or attend, this exciting event. We had over 120 participants last year, and we are confident that we will exceed that number this year in order to get the race and our sponsors a tremendous amount of local exposure. There areseveral ways for your company to contribute to the Sand Devil 5K Race, as detailed on the enclosed sponsorship commitment form. You can select the level of participation that best meets your needs, and be secure in the knowledge that your sponsorship donationsthrough this event will be used to help provide badly needed resources to the community of Page and its youth. We're counting on your support, and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please return your sponsorship commitment form to the address below or fax it to 928-645-9243 with ATTN: Octavian Maianu no later than April 9th. Thank you in advance for your willingness to support our efforts and make a difference in our community.
