Page-Lake Powell Greetings!

The Page Lake Powell Chamber of Commerce would like to extend our welcome to the newly seating Mayor and City Council, while also thanking the outgoing council members and Mayor Justice.

Our hope is that our relationship with the City will continue to grow and that the partnership will benefit both the businesses and residents of Page. Indeed, we are communicating regularly with the City to exchange ideas and information about new and existing projects that could be brought to the city. We hope that we can expand this relationship in the coming years.

As former Council Member Len Cook departed, he left with his thoughts on priorities that we hope the City agrees with. For those who were unable to attend, here are the brief notes.

 - Support for the Tourism Board. Although the Chamber is a proponent of expanding the industry base to increase diversity, we know that Tourism is a major life line for Page. Mr. Cook suggested that whichever Council member is most likely to curtail the Tourism Budget volunteer to replace him as the Council liaison to the Tourism Board. For our part, the Chamber is heavily involved with both the Tourism Board and a number of events that are hosted around the year.

- Pushing forward with the Horseshoe Bend Trail. This new trail has the potential to add significant benefit to both the residents who live here and tourists looking for a new way to explore the canyon. The Chamber is participating in the meetings with the NPS / ADOT / City of Page, and encourages those who are so inclined to support this project.

- Continuing to develop the relationship with the NPS, specifically regarding the Quagga/Zebra Mussel prevention program. While recognizing the devastating effect that an infestation would have on this area, we also must be aware that any prevention program must be tempered against the potential negative impact on the local economy. Continued and expanded City involvement would help ensure that all stakeholders are fairly represented. The Chamber is also attending the meetings to make sure we do our part.

While we feel that the City has been actively involved in all these aspects to date, it was a nice way of passing the torch and well worth consideration. We look forward to seeing the great things this new Council will move forward with and wish them the best of luck.

Sincerely,
Vin Paitoon
