Issue: # 13 October 2009
Greetings!
Fall is on the way, it's a great time to settle in with the arts. (Maybe just a couple more plein aire sessions before the weather turns.) MHA offers many opportunities for inspiration. Read on to find yours!
October Gallery Exhibit
Mint Hill Arts is proud to present
"Pastels and Paintings by Martha Faires"
Opening Reception Friday, October 9,7-9pm
Exhibit runs through November 5th, 2009.

Martha in her studio.
                                                                  Sailing Again

In Martha's words,
" I have had a love affair with the arts since childhood."

Martha Faires grew up in Abbeyville, South Carolina and recalls receiving a John Gnagy  "Learn To Draw Set" as a Christmas present. How many of us remember his show on TV? Martha majored in English and minored in Fine Art obtaining a Master of Arts Degree. This helped her secure a teaching job in a small college in Taiwan where she lived for eight years. While living in Taiwan she was also able to study Chinese water color painting.
Although Martha loves the rich colors and textures of oils and the elusive qualities of water color she comes back again and again to pastel where she creates the map-like patterns and textures she loves.
Some of the artists who have inspired her are as follows:
John Singer Sergeant, Michelangelo Caravaggio, Jan Vermeer, Rembrant van Rijn, John Carlson, Marc Hanson,  Michael Shane Neal and the Impressionists.
Martha stays busy in her studio by both painting and teaching regular classes and workshops. For information regarding her private classes please go to www.marthafaires.com.

"I am captivated by the ordinary man, the simple little house,
the rugged oak, the curly hair of a spaniel, the white explosion
of a cumulous cloud. Nothing is insignificant."

MHA is a volunteer-based organization that absolutely relies on the strength of its members. Your help is appreciated and needed. Please take a moment now to consider how you can contribute to our continued success. See below for just a few ideas.

  • Volunteers are needed to help with Discover Mint Hill and the Garage Sale on Saturday Oct 10. MHA is committed to participating in this community event. We need help with the following tasks:
  1. Gallery sitting
  2. Help manning the craft table
  3. Volunteers to help with the garage sale
  4. Demo Artists
Please email Laura to volunteer for any of these tasks.
  • The gallery is always in need of sitters. If each member sat one shift at the gallery, we would be covered for almost a year. Email Carlos for details.
  • The Reception Committee needs 1-2 people to help with shopping or set up for our gallery receptions. This is a once a month or less commitment. Email  Lisa
  • Our Historian, Nena Hartz, always needs pictures, newpaper clippings, or other documents about MHA for organization's scrapbook. Notify Nena if you have a contribution. By the way, our scrapbook is beautiful and is available for viewing in our Library. Thanks Nena!

We are saddened to learn of the passing of MHA member Johnell Kinsey. Johnell was a talented photographer and always a friendly face at the gallery. Our sympathies are with all of his friends and family.
