Issue: # 11 August 2009
Greetings!

Fall is always a busy time for the Arts, and there are abundant opportunities for artists coming up. One of the goals of Mint Hill Arts is to be an information resource for our members. Each month our newsletter, Art Matters, contains a block called Opportunities, with a link to the Opportunities page on our website. There you will find listed many current events of interest, including classes, calls for artists, and interesting exhibits. Be sure to check out the opportunities section of the news letter-this and every month. Enjoy!

August Gallery Exhibit
Illustrating..A Career
A Retrospective of the work of Marcus Hamilton
Opening Reception Friday, August 14 7:00-9:00 pm
Exhibit runs through September 4
This month Mint Hill Arts is pleased to present the work of Mint Hill's own Marcus Hamilton in Illustrating... A Career.  Mr. Hamilton is widely known as the daily panel cartoonist of the Dennis the Menace Comic strip, but this month's exhibit will feature many highlights of his remarkable career as an illustrator for publications such as the Saturday Evening Post U.S. News and World Report, as well as story illustration and advertising art. Dennis will of course be making an appearance as well. As a special treat Mr. Hamilton will be signing Dennis the Menace prints at the gallery reception on August 14. Prints will be available for $5, with all proceeds going to Mint HIll Arts.

August Guest Speaker
Chas Fagen
Tuesday August 25, 7:00-9:00 pm
Don't miss our August meeting!  Our guest artist is internationally known artist Chas Fagan.

Fagan has gained national prominence and recognition as an accomplished portraitist, sculptor and painter. His portraits display a classic, layering technique and exhibit an extraordinary likeness of the subject, all the while managing to reveal eac
h subject's unique personality. This talent has earned the artist accolades as a highly sought-after portrait painter, including a commission to paint a complete set of Presidential portraits for C-SPAN's 2001 Peabody Award-winninChas Fagang program, "American Presidents."   Fagan's work includes the portrait of Barbara Bush that hangs in the downstairs corrider of the White House, an eight-foot bronze sculpture of President H.W. Bush in Houston, a recently installed 7 foot bronze sculpture of President Ronald Reagan at the Capitol, a bas-relief sculpture of President Ronald Reagan for the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan that hangs uniquely on a piece of the Berlin Wall, painted portraits of many other dignitaries, and beautiful landscapes.

Fagan is a magna cum laude graduate of Yale University, where he received a degree in Russian and East European studies. A self-taught artist, he spent much of his childhood in Brussels, Belgium, where he was artistically influenced by the works of great European masters. This interest in traditional art, coupled with his incomparable skill in form and color, fuels his distinctively elegant style. Fagan currently resides in Charlotte, N.C., and recent solo exhibitions of his works have been hosted by Shain Gallery in Charlotte, Metropolitan Gallery in Washington, D.C., and Sommerville Manning Gallery in Greenville, Del.

Mint Hill Arts is a School Tools Drop Off Site in August
During the month of August, the School Tools Campaign will collect and distribute school supplies to thousands of Charlotte's (and other counties) neediest students. The most needed items are folders, pencils, glue sticks, ruled paper, colored pencils, markers, crayons, highlighters and erasers. Drop off your donation anytime during regular gallery hours, at the August reception or meeting. Thank You!
