June is here are so are lots of exciting things at your library.  

Homeschoolers Storytime - Preschool Program

Tuesdays 2:30-3 p.m.

Early Learning Center

Homeschoolers and their families are invited to come and listen to a wide variety of stories from traditional folk tales to fractured fairy tales.  Recommended for children of all ages.  Register.

Babies and Books - Preschool Program 

Thursdays, 10:10-10:30 a.m.

Early Learning Center 

Parents/Caregivers and their infant ages 6 months to 23 months will have an engaging time exploring books, songs, fingerplays, rhymes, and movement activities together.   No registration required.  

 

Three-Year-Old Art Time - Preschool Program

Wednesday, June 22 and 29-10:10-10:30 a.m.

Early Learning Center

Parents/Caregivers and their three-year-old child will create a variety of art projects.  Each camp session is limited to 10 children and their caregivers.  Register.

Digging in the Dirt - Youth Program 

Tuesdays in June, July and August, 11:30-12:15 p.m.

Waukegan Public Library Family Garden

Grab your kids and a spade, and be prepared to get dirty! Expert gardeners will show families simple steps to growing their own food. The club meets at the library's outdoor garden and other garden cooperatives around Lake County (see website for further information on this.)   In case of poor weather conditions, we will meet in the Early Learning Center.  Each session is limited to 12 children and their caregiver. Recommended for children ages 4-7.  Register.

Young Artist Workshop: Batik Technique -Youth Program

Wednesday, June 15, 6 p.m.  

Bradbury Room

Learn how to create fish and other sea life using the ancient art form of Batik. Age 7 and up.  Register.

 

Sensational Sixes and Sevens - Youth Program 

Monday, June 20 and 27, 1-1:30 p.m.

Messy Art-Come use a variety of art tools to create a masterpiece.  Grades K-2.  Each camp session is limited to 15 children and their caregivers.  Register.

Join us for the sixth Harry Potter celebration of the year! This month we continue with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, with fun activities, crafts, snacks, and a special reading from Professor Dumbledore!  PRegister.  

Keyboard Class - Youth/Teen Program

Four sessions beginning June 13, 1:30-3 p.m.

Computer Learning Center (Main Floor)

This fun class is for children in grades 5-7 who want to learn computer keyboarding skills.   Register.

Food For Thought-Summer Reading Club - Teen/Adult Program

June 15 - August 31

Entry bookmarks for the summer reading club are available on the main floor of the library.  Read a book; submit an entry into one of four monthly prize drawings.  The more books you read; the more chances to win. There will be monthly drawings at the end of each month.  Winners have a chance to win a meal at one of our local sponsoring establishments and the grand prize is a Platinum Package for two to the Genesee Theatre.  Donating sponsors: Big Ed's BBQ, Fong's Kitchen, Genesee Theatre, Greentown Tavern, and Jerry's Tacos.  Visit the library for details and bookmark entry forms.

Monthly open mic series begins in June with Poetry Open Mic - Your audience awaits! Step up to the mic and express yourself in words.  Choose a favorite poem or write your own.  Other series to follow this summer are Music Open Mic and Bradbury Open Mic.  For performers age 13 and up.   Register.

 

Digital Divide Computer Classes - Adult Program

North Shore Gas Adult Literacy Classroom

New computer classes in June offered in both Spanish and English; Advanced computer class in English including learning about PowerPoint.  Daytime and evening hours.  Please check calendar for class details. Registration begins two weeks prior to class start date.

28th Annual Ray Bradbury Creative Contest -Adult Program

Writers, artists and other visionaries, here's an opportunity for you! Submit a creative response on the theme of risk-taking presented in Ray Bradbury's short story, "The April Witch," for the chance to win cash prizes and awards. 

 

Creative categories include written entries (short stories or essays), visual arts (sculptures, paintings, photos and drawings), and multimedia (video or song). Submission deadline: Sept. 7, 2011. Contest Rules and Entry Form.

 

 

Adult Drop-in Tutoring & Computer Lab Time -Adult Program

North Shore Gas Adult Literacy Room (Lower Level)

Open to adults looking for help with reading, writing, math and beginning computer skills. Trained tutors available to work with you. Child care available for ages 6 and under while you attend tutoring. Drop-in basis, no registration required (no cost).

The Waukegan Public Library has served the community of Waukegan for more than 112 years providing opportunities to learn, gather, be informed and entertained.  The library houses one of the largest collections of materials in Lake County.  Patrons get two hours of free parking in the garage located at the corner of County and Clayton Streets with a validated parking pass and a library card.
