GROW Ethiopia - EBA's Reforestation Project in Ethiopia
GROW Ethiopia
GROW Ethiopia is EBA's initiative to raise funds for a two-year reforestation project in the state of Gojjam in Ethiopia. Gojjam is often referred to as the "breadbasket" of Ethiopia as the farmers in this region produce so much of Ethiopia's food. This intense farming, in combination with a large population, has created a landscape devoid of trees and has led to extensive soil erosion and subsequent loss of arable land.

Consulting engineers: Myers-[B]riggs type and temperament preferences
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator results from 740 professional employees of consulting engineering firms show that a greater percentage of consulting engineers have a Type preference for Introversion over Extraversion, Intuition over Sensing, Thinking over Feeling, and Judging over Perceiving than the national U.S. population.....  read more...
Traffic Engineering / Road Safety
  • How to improve safety on various types of motorways.
Traffic Engineering / Road SafetyEffectiveness of temporary traffic control measures in highway work zones
In the United States, hundreds of people lose their lives each year and many more are injured due to vehicle crashes in the work zones. Over the years, temporary traffic control (TTC) measures have been developed and deployed in work zones. To continuously improve the safety, there is a need to identify the traffic control deficiencies in work zones by evaluating the effectiveness of existing TTC measures based on the real crash cases..... read more...

Driver assistanceDriver assistance systems aim to halve traffic accidents
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to reveal how technology is being applied to augment drivers' skills and improve road safety throughout Europe. Design/methodology/approach - The paper begins with a description of the European Commission's car safety initiatives, and why they are necessary. Then three driver-assistance systems are examined in detail: adaptive cruise control, lane departure and lane-changing systems, and driver vigilance monitoring.....  read more...

Establishing right-of-way standards for roundabouts in the city of Calgary, Canada
The City of Calgary, Canada, is developing a roundabout policy to guide developers and City staff. The process considers the needs of stakeholders including transit, parks, roads, maintenance, traffic engineering and road design. Overall, additional right of way is required for undivided and divided collector roadways. Current right of way for major streets is sufficient to accommodate single or multilane roundabouts......  read more...

DrillingProduced fluids and shallow groundwater in coalbed methane (CBM) producing regions of Alberta, Canada: Trace element and rare earth element geochemistry
The production of coalbed methane (CBM) represents a vital new source of natural gas supply in Western Canada. There are, however, concerns over potential negative environmental impacts on groundwater resources caused by potential contamination with fluids and gases from coal-bearing strata.....  read more...

Integrated treatment process using a natural Wyoming clinoptilolite for remediating produced waters from coalbed natural gas operations
Coalbed natural gas (CBNG) development in western U.S. states has resulted in an increase in an essential energy resource, but has also resulted in environmental impacts and additional regulatory needs. A concern associated with CBNG development relates to the production of the copious quantities of potentially saline-sodic groundwater required to recover the natural gas, hereafter referred to as CBNG water.....  read more...

PermafrostPermafrost and climate in Europe: Monitoring and modelling thermal, geomorphological and geotechnical responses
We present a review of the changing state of European permafrost within a spatial zone that includes the continuous high latitude arctic permafrost of Svalbard and the discontinuous high altitude mountain permafrost of Iceland, Fennoscandia and the Alps......  read more...

Trees in water-limited environmentsThe hydrogeological role of trees in water-limited environments
Field experiments have already proven that many tree species in water-limited environments (WLE) depend on groundwater. Typically, such trees survive dry seasons and droughts by uptake of water, directly from the groundwater body or from the capillary fringe, by rooting systems that may extend to several tens of meters depth......  read more...
