Greetings!
One of the recurrent themes of our client surveys is that you would like to hear more about the services EBA provides. At the same time, we recognize that you receive way too many emails that are of no use to you.
Our challenge is to provide something of immediate use, that you would look forward to receiving and that would also keep you abreast of what is happening here at EBA, without adding to that email pile.
We understand that it is a daunting task for anyone to keep abreast of advances in science and technology, even in your chosen field. Yet, "the more you read, the more you know" - consistent perusal of current literature can keep your creativity alert and receptive to innovation.
In recognition that we all need to "keep up" with technical literature, yet few of us have the time to scan and read all of the journals and publications, we have developed the EBA Technical Digest. Every three months, EBA's experts in various fields review hundreds of publications to identify those precious few that are useful. We then provide our staff with reader-friendly abstracts of key articles that we believe are important.
We propose that we make the Technical Digest available to you through the EBA eNews. Every three months, we will send you a newsletter that provides you with abstracts from the many technical fields to inspire you. We will also bring you up to date with what is happening here at EBA.
If you would like to subscribe to this service, please click on the link below. It is cancellable at any time you wish, we promise.
Sincerely,
J. Paul Ruffell, P.Eng. President EBA Engineering Consultants Ltd.

Traffic Engineering / Road Safety
- What do road conditions have to do with the price of goods in Canada? Everything.
Development of frost and thaw depth predictors for decision making about variable load restrictions
Low-volume roads covering the northern part of Ontario, Canada, are a critical asset; they enable the movement of goods from remote resource areas to markets. However, challenged by a combination of heavy, low-frequency traffic loading and a high number of freeze-thaw cycles for which most have not been structurally designed, such highways often experience seasonal damage and premature traffic-induced deterioration. To mitigate these impacts..... read more... |
Hydrogeology
- Did you ever want to read more about the visionaries who develop the fundamental concepts behind a field of science?
- Do you want to find out more about how to remove comtaminants from groundwater?
Comprehensive principles of quantitative hydrogeology established by Darcy (1856) and Dupuit (1857)
Henry Darcy and Jules Dupuit were born 1 year apart, were classmates during their undergraduate and graduate education in civil engineering, and were colleagues in the French corps of civil engineers, with overlapping appointments as inspector general in the early 1850s. At that time Darcy turned over, to Dupuit, his position as Director of Water and Bridges in Paris and the research on pipe flow he had begun..... read more...
Site characterisation for improved assessment of contaminant fate in fractured aquifers
A methodology for the improved characterisation of organic contaminant fate in fractured aquifers is presented. Using rotary cored boreholes, the methodology combines borehole logging techniques (caliper, gamma, resistivity, digital televiewer logs) and hydraulic testing (1-2 m straddle-packers) with real-time on-site measurement of aquifer lithology, fracture and contaminant distribution in rock core and groundwater samples. The ensemble data are integrated to interpret the fracture network..... read more...
Arsenic and iron removal from water using constructed soil filter - A novel approach
Arsenic poisoning is a global problem. It is known that groundwater in Bangladesh and West Bengal predominantly contains As(III) and concentrations of Fe(II) which are often too low for removal of arsenic in optimum quantities. To eliminate arsenic from drinking water, several basic methods such as coagulation, adsorption, ion exchange, filtration, membrane processes, are reported. To deal with this issue on a small to large scale, we present a novel approach to remove arsenic and iron..... read more... |
Intelligent Transportation
- "Greening" of black tops is a hot topic for construction experts, government officials, and environmentalists.
Exploring green highways
Construction professionals in the US are making efforts to design and implement sustainable highway design in the country. Experts state that several challenges are faced in developing sustainable highway systems in the country. The lack of a standard definition for sustainability in highway design is one of these challenges. A green highway rating program needs to be introduced that will provide a way to update the existing state and federal highway best management practices. The rating system ..... read more... |
