ADHD and ADD: December Babies

A new study reports that children born in December are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than those born in other months. Why? Because ADHD diagnosis largely relies on observation of the child's behavior:

"Compared to that of his peers."

So a December child, if she goes into school that year, will be almost one year younger than her peers. This age difference can LARGELY affect a teacher's perception of how the child 'should' act when comparing her to other children in the class.

In fact, a rough look at prescribed pharmaceutical drugs showed that 39% of children taking ADHD had December birthdays!

Does this mean you shouldn't put your child into kindergarten until he is 5...probably yes! It is not about how smart they are, it's how they are on an emotional level. Many parents will say "Oh, he's good with other kids" and "she gets along great in her pre-school" and that's wonderful. However, the major differences won't be very noticeable until your child is around Grades 3-5 and by the time you see how different they are from their peers, it's too late to change the grade they are in and they will spend the rest of their school years 'trying to act older than they really feel inside."

Chemical of the Day: Carbomer

What is it:

Carbomer is a white fluffy powder that's used in lotions and other cosmetic formulas as a thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier. Carbomer does not actually refer to one particular molecule, but is a generic term for a series of polymers primarily made from acrylic acid. Source

What are its risks:

The Cosmetics Industry Review Board has deemed carbomer safe for cosmetic use.
Carbomer can have a varying pH that must be neutralized in order for it to do its job of thickening. A formula containing carbomer will sometimes have these neutralizing agents listed, including triethanolamine (TEA), sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, tetrasodium EDTA, and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate. Other times, companies will buy pre-neutralized carbomer, which may or may not list the neutralizing agent. (Source)
Full-strength carbomer can be highly irritating to skin and eyes and may have a permeating effect on skin. (Source)

Steph's Opinion:

Carbomer is a synthetic chemical made specifically for cosmetic use. It has been in use for over 50 years, and has a pretty long history of safety. However, neutralizing agents such as TEA or tetrasodium EDTA may or may not be disclosed on the label, and could possibly be contaminants in the formulation.
