Fluoride - Know the Dangers

Confused about whether or not to use a toothpaste the contains fluoride? You're not alone. Recent studies indicate you may have enough fluoride in your diet.

Fluoride is under scrutiny due to recent discoveries that ingestion of fluoride is harmful to your health. It is a naturally occurring element found in many foods and drinks. Since the 1940s, fluoride has been added to U.S drinking water in order to help prevent tooth decay. The U.S Centers for Disease Control estimate that 184 million Americans, 70 percent of the population, drink fluoridated water.

The Better Health Channel reports that fluoride helps reduce the amount of acid in your mouth and works to repair tooth damage before it worsens. When used in moderation, fluoride helps keep your teeth healthy and strong. Many toothpastes and mouth rinses contain fluoride to help with oral hygiene.

Tooth decay occurs when acid attacks the tooth enamel and wears it down. For children, tooth decay can affect the roots and the adult teeth that are still forming. By brushing and flossing properly, you will reduce the chances of suffering from tooth decay.

If your drinking water already contains fluoride, it is possible you are getting too much of it already. Too much fluoride can result in many adverse health conditions such as bone fractures, cancers, fluorosis and joint pain. Fluoride is found in many foods, drinks and your drinking water, and by using toothpastes and mouth rinses with fluoride, you may be exposed to higher levels of it.

   

Young children are especially susceptible to fluoride toxicity if they ingest too much. Compared to adults, younger children consume more water and as a result, are exposed to higher levels of fluoride. The company, Nursery Water, is currently under public fire for advertising that the fluoridated water it sells for infants and children is safe. If ingested, fluoride can be toxic and if you get it from many sources, it is hard to accurately determine a safe, allowable, amount of fluoride.

If you wish to use toothpaste with fluoride, choose low-level fluoride toothpaste and do not swallow the paste. For children, use only a pea-sized amount and ensure they spit out the toothpaste.

Other natural toothpastes can be found at your health store, ones that do not contain any fluoride. You can even use a toothpaste with fluoride a couple of times a week and then use the fluoride-free toothpaste on the other days, to limit your fluoride exposure. Remember that proper brushing, flossing and regular dental checkups are your best course of action for keeping your teeth healthy and strong.

Psychiatric Drugs Used to Treat ADHD in Adults & Kids Increases 

November 16, 2011 - The Wall Street Journal has just reported that psychiatric drug use and adult ADHD treatments has increased across all age groups over the last decade. Use for some drugs has doubled and even tripled, causing concern that some of these drugs are being over-prescribed.

With one in five adults now taking at least one psychiatric drug, pharmacy date now shows there has been a steady increase in drugs prescribed to treat mental illness. In the last ten years, drugs like Concerta and Vyvanse have tripled in use among individuals ages 20 to 44.

In the U.S, psychiatric drugs are the most widely prescribed class of drug. In 2010, anti-psychotic medications prescribed to treat bipolar disorder, depression and schizophrenia resulted in sales of $16.2 billion dollars. $11.6 billion was spent on antidepressants and drugs used to treat ADHD account for $7.2 billion in sales.

There is much debate about the safety of using psychiatric drugs to treat mental illness. The side effects range from mild to severe and in 2004, the Food and Drug Administration, FDA, required a "Black Box" warning to be added to psychiatric drugs. The Black Box warning is the FDA's most serious warning that can be required on products. The warning included side effects such as increased suicidal thoughts for children and teens and increased risk of death for some elderly patients.

Reported in the Vancouver Sun, the number of Canadian kids taking antipsychotic medications has more than doubled as well.

From 2005 to 2009, recommendations for using antipsychotic drugs for children and youth increased 114 per cent. Children as young as six years old, are being prescribed these drugs and experts are concerned they are also being over-prescribed. There is too little known about the long-term effects on the child's cognitive, social and physical development when using these medications.

Risperidone, used to treat schizophrenia, mania, stuttering and obsessive-compulsive disorder, was recommended 340,670 times in 2010 by Canadian doctors to treat children who were 17 years old and younger. Another antipsychotic drug, called quetiapine, was recommended 160,700 times.

Doctors are now being asked to watch for major side effects in children using these types of drugs. Dramatic weight gain, abnormal face and jaw movements and tremors are some of the known side effects.

Children using these drugs can get so hungry their parents have had to lock the fridge to keep the child from binge-eating. After 10 1/2 weeks of taking the drug olanzapine, children gain 8.5 kilograms on average and are also at risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and glucose problems.

It is believed families resort to drug therapy because there is a lack of non-drug therapy for children who suffer from mental illness. While there are many natural approaches to treating ADHD for kids, access to these programs is not always easily available to those who want to try them.

Many parents have also looked at using natural herbs and supplements to treat their child's ADHD but these treatment options are usually not covered by insurance and can be quite costly for the parents or caregivers. Because each individual adult and child responds differently, there is no drug or treatment that is proven to work 100 per cent to treat ADHD and often, individuals with ADHD will try more than one treatment option before their ADHD is under control.
