Canada Post & Shipping Issues
|
Canada Post Strike & Shipping Delays
Well who could've imagined the fiasco that would have unfolded in the last couple of weeks with Canada Post? It was a very frustrating time for us as well as our customers and our suppliers and we are still experiencing a bit of back-log with supplies from the strike.
We thank our customers for being patient during this time and hope that within a week everything will be back to normal. Here are some of the main issues experienced with the Canada Post Strike:
Orders Delayed
Some customer orders were shipped before the lockout occurred and as a result, those parcels were locked in warehouses and held until the strike was over. If you've been waiting longer than a week for your package to arrive, we ask you to please track your package if you have not yet received it and see where it is in the system. Please contact us to let us know you haven't received your package and we'll begin tracking it as well!
Orders that were shipped after the strike was over have been shipping fine and on time.
Native Remedies
Our Native Remedies order was delayed since it ships USPS and it is Canada Post that picks it up @ the border to bring it into Canada. The last time we checked, (this morning) it has cleared customs and should be on the truck on its way here. We are hoping to see the Native Remedies back in stock within 24-48 hours. If you have asked to be notified when the products are in you will be emailed as soon as we have them.
We apologize very much for this delay and know that many people have had to interrupt their supplement schedule because they ran out. We try to ensure Native Remedies is always on hand in the store so we don't run out but we ordered prior to the strike and were left with our hands tied once the lockout came into effect.
If you have run out of your Native Remedies we encourage you to choose "Express Post" for quicker shipping if you live outside of Airdrie/Calgary. As soon as the products are back in stock we will post it on Facebook and Twitter as well as email anyone who is on the wait list.
Why We Choose Canada Post
There are a few reasons why we choose Canada Post as our shipping solution. Their prices are better which allows us to keep your shipping costs lower than they would be with other shippers. We don't always break even on shipping either, often the shipping cost is a couple of dollars more than what you pay but we pick up the difference to help you get your items with affordable shipping fees.
Canada Post also has a monopoly on certain addresses such as Range Rd addresses and PO boxes. We could send items with UPS or Fed-Ex but they just turn it over to Canada Post anyways to finish delivery!
Canada Post has the best delivery option, if you aren't home they leave you a door knocker with instructions on where to pick up. Pick up can be done at a post office location. Canada Post won't leave your item sitting outside unprotected and they don't make you wait around for 2nd or 3rd attempt deliveries, so if you miss your delivery you can pick it up either that evening or the next day depending on the post office's availability.
In the event of another strike we will consider using other couriers but would let you know beforehand as shipping prices would increase and there is the chance that your address may not qualify for a Fed-Ex or UPS delivery. Hopefully there will be no more strikes!

Airdrie Farmer's Market - June 1st 2011
We are happy to have a booth @ this season's market in Airdrie, Alberta. Our customers have asked us if we could put in an appearance and this summer we will! While we will try to bring as much as we can to the market, we can't bring every product we carry! Also - depending on weather, we may not display everything (since items like soaps don't mix well with rain!). So not everything may be on display but if you don't see what you are looking for - ask! Chance are good we have it there but they may still be in the boxes!

Non-toxic nail polish, mineral wear makeup, organic sunscreen, natural bug repellents, lotions, soaps, hair care, cleaning products, aromatherapy, baby care, perfumes and oils, snoring and sleep stones, native remedies and hazelwood necklaces/bracelets.
Forms of payment we'll accept:
 Using PayPal we can process credit cards. For your security we will require a piece of photo ID if you choose to use credit cards, to verify you are the owner of the card. Credit card information is not kept on file. Cash is always accepted and the legion also has a banking machine available, though it has run out of cash before.
Online ordering during market season:Keeping accurate inventory during market days will be a challenge. The numbers on the store site will not be accurate once we leave for the market. We have two choices: 1. We can close our online store until the next day when we update our inventory or, 2. We can leave the store open and may have potential back-order situations. After much thought, we've decided to keep the store open and deal with any back-orders as they arise. We will be ordering quite a bit during market season and hope back-orders are kept at a minimum. Any orders received the morning of Wed will have those products put aside. It is only orders placed after 12 noon on Wednesdays and before 11am Thursdays that may experience back-orders. |

Toxic Metals in Makeup Cosmetics
May 17, 2011 - In a report released by Environmental Defence, it was disclosed that 100% of products tested, all tested positive nickel and over 90% tested positive for both lead and beryllium. Environmental Defence is calling on Health Canada to modify their regulating standards and to enforce the laws set forth.
What Toxic Heavy Metals Were Found in Makeup Cosmetics
SGS Canada tested a wide array of mascaras, eye shadows, lip glosses and other cosmetic products that are worn everyday by most women. The results were alarming and outrageous:
- 100% tested positive for nickel
- 96% tested positive for lead

- 90% tested positive for beryllium
- Products, on average, contained at least 4 of the 8 metals of concern (arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, beryllium, nickel, selenium and thallium)
- Highest levels of arsenic (70ppm) cadium (3ppm) and lead (110ppm), found in lip glosses that are often ingested while being worn
- Highest level of lead was Benefit Benetint lip gloss, 110ppm whichwas 10 times higher than allowable level (Health Canada allows 10ppm maximum on lead in products) The same brand contained 70ppm Arsenic, which is 20x higher than Health Canada limits of 3ppm.
How Toxic Heavy Metals Get Into Makeup and Cosmetics
These metals are not put there intentionally, they are simply impurities in the product and are not required to be listed on the labels, since they are not a directly-added ingredient. Manufacturers could, and should, take care to remove these impurities, but time is money and since guidelines are so laid-back, very few manufacturers remove these heavy metals from the final product.
Neither Health Canada nor the FDA require the manufacturers to supply test results before the market is allowed for sale to the general public. Rather, it is up to the manufacturer to "know" what is allowed and not allowed and to follow the rules. Basically, it's an honor system and the consumer pay the price for those manufacturers who are not on their best honor.
Toxic Metals of Concern in Makeup Cosmetics
Canada needs to modify their guidelines to not only lower the allowable amount of toxic metals allowed in makeup cosmetics, but also needs to include the whole range of metals that are a concern. They include:
- Arsenic
- Cadmium
- Lead
- Mercury
- Beryllium
- Nickel
- Selenium
- Thallium

Dangers of ADHD/ADD Drugs and Links to Childhood Death
June14, 2010 - Harry Hucknall was 10 years old when he took his own life. Diagnosed as having ADHD and prescribed both Ritalin and Prozac, Harry had mentioned feelings of unwell and did not appear to be happy. Tests have revealed he had higher doses than a normal adult would have had for the same problems. Harry was not alone, hundreds of children have died from drug-related deaths, ADHD drugs that is.
What ADHD or ADD Is and Why It Needs Treatment
 ADHD or ADD is a condition that stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The main difference between ADHD and ADD is the hyperactivity component. For the sake of simplicity, we will refer to the condition as ADHD.
Children with ADHD have trouble focusing and concentrating. They don't always follow instructions, forget things quickly, have a hard time socially with peers and often can't sit still for long periods of time. It is hard to make an ADHD diagnosis until the child is school-age, that is, one he is in a structured classroom setting. Drug guidelines are set to not be administered to any child under the age of six, because before then, it is quite impossible to tell if the child has ADHD or not.
Many pharmaceutical drugs have been created to treat ADHD, though the safety and effectiveness of these drugs is really not yet proven. The only drug that has been around long enough to understand long-term effects is Ritalin and it has been proven to be dangerous and lead to addiction tendencies. However, most doctors and educators push to treat these children with mind-altering drugs so they fit into the norm. Often, more than one drug is prescribed and children end up on a "cocktail" of drugs.
Diagnosing ADHD in Children
So how is ADHD diagnosed? It is a term that was invented 50 years ago and covered a variety of symptoms. There is no concrete or absolute test for ADHD. Basically, to diagnose ADHD parents and educators will be asked to 'evaluate' the child on their behavior and especially compared to their peers. A psychiatrist will then evaluate the results, compare them to peer levels and decide whether or not your child is 'up to par'.
A study, done by Todd Elder, indicated that nearly one million children in the U.S may be misdiagnosed with ADHD based on this method of ADHD testing. The reasoning behind it deals with children who are the youngest of the classroom. In some cases, children who enter kindergarten when they are four (typically those that have birthdays at the end of year) will be almost one year younger than their peers. Developmentally, they will always be more immature than their peers and when evaluated in comparison to them, they will be seen as "not equal." (Well no kidding! One year is a big difference when it comes to children.)
