MonthlyFeaturePiggy Paint Non-Toxic Nail Polish - Old Formula

We are getting rid of our Piggy Paint stock and once it's gone, it's gone! When customers asked me to bring in some new colors for Piggy Paint, I did. But I quickly saw that some of the new colors contained Methylisothiazolinone or MI (MIT). My understanding from the chemist of the nail polish is that MIT is used as a preservative and would be present in all Piggy Paint going forward. That means any new bottles of polish from Piggy Paint will contain MIT.

Our prices are still comparable to U.S. prices and lower than many stores (who charge almost $12 a bottle). Each bottle is $9.99 and we have many left in stock, so scoop them up and consider them as gifts for holidays and birthdays!

Natural e GREEN does not offer products with these chemicals and as a result, we will not bring in the new formula of Piggy Paint. Our promise to you, our customer, is that our products are without the common chemicals you get everywhere else and we plan on sticking to that commitment. So stock up now and grab some of these new colors. They really are fun and I'm sad to see them go - but safety first. Check out what's left of our Piggy Paint line here and grab it before it's gone!

LivingHealthyArticleMethylisothiazolinone - Chemical Preservative

Methylisothiazolinone, or MIT, is a chemical preservative used in many cosmetics and often replaces parabens.

Used often to preserve cosmetics and personal care products, methylisothiazolinone or MIT, is a chemical preservative. In 2010, MIT gained popularity when news channels did a segment on sunscreens and warned consumers about certain ingredients to watch out for.

Health Risks of MITmethylisothiazolinone mi mit chemical preservative cosmetics

MIT is known to cause skin allergies and is an immune sensitizer. In-vitro tests have shown MIT to have neuro-toxic effects on mammalian cells.

There have not been enough human studies to verify how harmful MIT is to human health, but there is also not enough evidence to prove it is safe for human health.

The EWG rates MIT as a "6" on the toxicity scale. Many manufacturers do not like the EWG and say their results are skewed and have no perspective attached to them.

In Canada, restrictions are set on use of MIT in cosmetics and personal care products. MIT must not exceed 100ppm (parts per million). Japan also restricts use of MIT when used in combination with other chemicals.

Another chemist suggests that because MIT contains a "benzyne" ring in it's chemical makeup, there is a chance it is also an endocrine disruptor. More studies will be necessary to determine human health safety of this chemical preservative.

New Piggy Paint Formula and Levels of MIT

The new formula of Piggy Paint contains only 50ppm, compared to the allowable limit of 100ppm.

At Natural e GREEN, we will not make tell you what is and is not safe, that is for you to decide. Our store's  mission is to avoid these chemical compounds and thus our decision to not carry future formulations of Piggy Paint. Should human studies be done to prove MIT is safe in low doses, we will reconsider, but for now, no such studies exist and MIT is still considered to be a toxic chemical preservative.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: ADHD/ADD
Are Food Colors a possible link?
ADHDArticle
April 1, 2011 - After recent British studies indicated that a possible association between food dyes and hyperactivity existed, the FDA sat down to discuss the findings. As the Los Angeles Times reports, the FDA has indicated the further research is warranted into this issue.

Food Dyes Cause Hyper Behavior: Trigger ADHD Symptoms

Photo: Food colorings
In a 2007 study, conducted by the U.K's Food Standards Agency, a test was done to see if children who consumed drinks with food dyes, suffered any adverse effects. They found that the children who were in the 8 and 9-year old categories did display more hyperactivity after drinking the juice that food dyes in it, than those who did not consume food dyes.

The European Parliament requires six food dyes to include the warning, " may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children". Manufacturers can use alternate colorings such as natural dyes made from fruits and vegetables.

What Kinds of Problems Can Food Dyes Cause?

While the studies are on-going right now, there is belief certain dyes can cause a lack of attention and increase in disruptive hyperactivity. While food dyes may not be the cause of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), they could certainly imitate the symptoms of ADHD and result in children being misdiagnosed with ADHD. They could also increase the severity of symptoms a child displays and make their hyperactivity and lack of focus worse which could have a detrimental effect on overall performance and even require a stronger dose of pharmaceutical medications.

In 1990, the FDA banned Red No. 3 in cosmetics and medicines, as it was linked to causing cancer in mice studies. However, the color is still permitted in foods.

Why Food Dyes Are Used

Photo: Candies with food dyes
Food dyes help make food look more appealing. Tomato juice, for example, takes on a brownish color after it has been processed, so adding a red food coloring helps it look more appealing to consumers.

Sensient Colors, one of the major color suppliers, has announced it will be spending $16 million to create the largest natural color manufacturing plant in North America. Many manufacturers are beginning to listen to consumer demand and change the way they produce their foods. Consumers are looking for healthier options and less chemical additives.

The FDA's Decision About Warning Labels on Food Dyes: Rejected

Photo: food dyes in drinks
In an 8-6 vote, the panel decided to not put warning labels on foods that contained food dyes. The reason: There isn't enough evidence to prove a direct link between consumption of food dyes and hyperactivity in children.

The panel argued that putting warnings on food labels may scare the public instead of educating them, since food dyes are so common in today's food choices. They did say,  however, that further testing is warranted but whether or not that testing is done remains to be seen. The panel only offers "recommendations" and it will be up to the FDA to implement further testing.

As Micheal Jacobson, Center of Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), indicates, " The question they should have asked is, 'Is there proof the dyes are safe ' ". As with many products on today's market, the FDA allows a variety of chemicals to be used in consumer products, stating that they are not deemed to be a human health priority and that they are expected to be safe, but there is not enough evidence to prove they are safe.  The FDA disallows chemicals if they have shown to be unsafe, but in a perfect world, our products would have to be certified to be safe before being allowed on store shelves. Of course, we don't live in a perfect world, not yet anyways!
