Canada's New Ban on Phthalates in Children's Products!
Canada has announced a new ban on phthalates when it comes to infant and children's products. The new restriction affects kids products ages four and under.
January 18, 2011 - New regulations on the use of six types of phthalates in childrens products were announced by the Honorable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health and Pierre Polievre, Member of Parliament for Nepean-Carleton.
Phthalates are chemicals used to make plastic soft and flexible. Commonly, phthalates are used in many children's and infant's toys and Health Canada reports that research has shown that phthalates may cause adverse health effects in young children.
Types of Children and Infant Products Phthalates Are Found InSince 1998, manufacturers have voluntarily not been used in certain soft vinyl toys and items such as pacifiers, teething products, rattles, baby bottle nipples and other products that were intended to be put into the infants mouth. In June 2011, the Consumer Product Safety Act will come into force, making consumer products safer for Canadians. Minister Aglukkaq says, " Today, we are again acting to make the toys and products that are imported, sold or advertised in Canada do not present a risk of phthalate exposure to children and infants."
Other Countries That Have Bans and Restrictions on Use of Phthalates in Children's ProductsCanada is now rising up to the same standards as the United States and European Union when it comes to using phthalates in children and infant products. Most other countries do not have any regulations in place regarding the use of phthalates in infants products and it will be Canada's responsibility to ensure products coming into the country are phthalate-free.  Helping Your ADHD or ADD Child Learn in School: Checklists
You may need the teacher's assistance, but having a good checklist can help your ADHD or ADD child keep on track while at school. A checklist can be posted inside the locker, in the binder and even on the desk. Your child can learn to refer to the list when he gets off track and is wondering what he is supposed to be doing. A basic checklist would include things like: - Make sure you have pencils, pens, erasers etc.
- Bring binder to class
- Keep all loose paper in binder and organize during free time or at home
- Write down assignments in daily agenda
- Have teacher sign agenda
- Bring agenda home for parents to review
