Taken from an article in MSN's Green Living Guide, these are 6 chemicals you want to look for and avoid when shopping for your personal care and cleaning products.
1. Phthalate family
di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP)
di (2-ehtylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
Can result in: endocrine disruption, carcinogen linked to birth defects, premature breast development,lowered sperm counts, damage to reproductive organs, lung/liver/kidney cancers.
Used to: make plastic soft & malleable
Found in: Cosmetics, hair products, lotions, deodorants
2. Sodium Lauryl (Laureth) Sulfate (SLS and SLES)
Can result in: suspected carcinogen to kidney & liver damage, nervous system disruption, damage to eyes causing cataracts, eczema, dermatitis, known to inflame skin layers and cause skin irritation.
Used to: foaming agent & emulsifier
Found in: toothpaste, shower gels, shampoo, soaps, lotions
3. Paraben Perservative (methyl/propyl/butyl/ethyl)
Can result in: hormone disrupter, mimics natural estrogen leading to cancer, linked to breast cancer, skin rashes
Used to: germicide & preservative
Found in: Conditioners, Shampoos, Lotions, Cosmetics, Deodorants, Sunscreens, Hair Styling
4. Formaldehyde/Diazolidinyl Urea
Can result in: carcinogen, causes allergic reactions and dermatitis, headaches, joint & chest pain, dizziness
Used to: disinfect, germicide, de-foamer, preservative, cheap and mixes easily with water
Found in: Shampoo, Conditioner, Gel, nails polish, cosmetics, anti-perspirants, mouthwash
5. Amine: Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA), Amonoethanolamine (MEA)
Can result in: hormone disrupter, carcinogen linked to cancer, irritant to skin, corrosive to eyes, dermatitis, reacts with other chemicals to form carcinogens
Used to: Emulsifier, PH adjuster, preservative, foaming agent
Found in: Shampoo, soap, Hairspray, Sunscreen, Cosmetics, Shaving cream
6. Propylene/ Butylene Glycol
Can result in: possible brain, liver and kidney abnormalities, respiratory irritation, hypoglycemia, skin rashes, dermatitis
Used to: cheap alternative to glycerin, Humectant (retains moisture)
Found in: deodorants, lotions, washes, conditioner, gel, creams hand wipes, lipsticks

Check your Products for toxicity

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a non-biased group working to expose the truth in product ingredients. They rate products from 0 -10 for toxicity and outline the ingredients and which ones have high toxicity concerns. The EWG is a great resource where you can type in your product brand name and see how they rank. You can also look around for alternatives and find safer products you can use.
