Taizé and Labyrinth Walk Tonight 
 

 

A service in the style of Taizé, which incorporates prayer, meditative singing, and silent reflection, will take place tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. This contemplative form of worship comes to us from the ecumenical community in Taizé, France, a community committed to promoting and praying for reconciliation, peace, unity, and healing throughout the world.

 

The service will be preceded by opportunity to walk the labyrinth in Anderson Hall between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. This meditative walk takes approximately twenty minutes.

A Farewell Reception for Tom Rook     

 

Tom Rook, who joined Fourth Church forty-three years ago and has faithfully served this congregation as a member of the pastoral staff since 1991--first as Associate Pastor and then as Parish Associate--is retiring on August 31. In honor of Tom's retirement, a farewell reception will take place during morning Coffee Hours this Sunday. Please join us for this opportunity to thank Tom for his long ministry among us and to wish him well in the next chapter of his life.

Can You Help with Carnaval?            

   

More Carnaval 2013 committee membersare needed to help solicit donations from organizations, corporations, and individuals to support this February 22 event, which benefits Chicago Lights, the Counseling Center, and the Center for Life and Learning. Those interested in helping are invited to attend a planning meeting on Thursday, September 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the 737 building.

Family Camp Is September 28-30     

   

It's time to sign up for Fall Family Camp, which this year will be held the weekend of September 28-30. Come enjoy a time of faith, fellowship, and fun with other Fourth Church families!

We gather on Friday evening at Presbyterian Camps in Saugatuck, Michigan. On Saturday we have programmed activities for adults and children in the morning, free time in the afternoon, and a campfire on the beach at the end of the day. On Sunday we worship in the outdoor chapel and conclude our time together with lunch.

Cornerstones Group Resumes Monthly Gatherings    

   

The Cornerstones fellowship group will kick off its monthly gatherings this fall with a picnic in the Garth courtyard on Friday, September 7 at 6:00 p.m. A main course and beverages will be provided; guests are asked to bring a salad, side dish, or dessert to share.

Helping Hands Project on Labor Day Weekend    

   

A group from Fourth Church will return to the site of last May's Urban Plunge mission trip at First Presbyterian Church (6400 S. Kimbark Ave.) to continue landscaping and gardening the church grounds. All are invited to join Helping Hands, a hands-on mission group at Fourth Church, for this work day opportunity on Saturday, September 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Have You Made an Officer Recommendation Yet?     

 

Next week is the last week to submit recommendations for church officers! Suggestions of members who have demonstrated gifts for leadership and ministry for the offices of Elder, Deacon, Trustee, and Chicago Lights Board are due by Saturday, September 1.  

 

Recommendation forms are available in the pew racks and can also be downloaded or completed online. Completed paper forms may be placed in the offering plate, dropped off at the reception desk, or mailed to the church.

Tutors Needed for the Fall    

 

The Chicago Lights Tutoring program supports more than 400 students from low-income communities through weekly one-to-one tutoring sessions with volunteers. Volunteers may also teach about a special interest or assist with enrichment classes and meal time. To learn more about the Tutoring program, new volunteers are asked to attend one of the following orientation sessions from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Dining Room:

The Life Time Tri Chicago triathlon will take place this Sunday, August 26. Please be advised that those using Lake Shore Drive from Division to Cermak that morning may want to plan alternate routes. A map of the triathlon's route is available here.

Music at Fourth Church         

   

There are just two more outdoor concerts left in this year's Music by the Fountain series. The first of the two is today's performance by vocalist Sam Fazio, which begins at 12:10 p.m. in the Garth. Next Friday, it will be a concert by Libby York. Bring a lunch and come enjoy some fun, free music outdoors!
