NEW HELP FOR HOMEOWNERS IN FORECLOSURE

SELF-HELP GUIDE AVAILABLE NOW!

With 1 in 14 Connecticut homeowners in foreclosure or greater than 90 days past due on their mortgages, more people than ever need help in preventing foreclosure.

In an effort to assist unrepresented homeowners the Connecticut Fair Housing Center has written and published "Representing Yourself in Foreclosure:  A Guide for Connecticut Homeowners."  The Guide is designed to be user-friendly and yet to comprehensively cover all parts of the foreclosure process.  It stresses the importance of Court-sponsored mediation since more than 75% of homeowners who participate in mediation are able to keep their homes.

A hard copy will be delivered to your legislative office on Monday, January 26, 2010.

New Foreclosure Prevention Attorney at the Center

The Center is pleased to announce that it has hired a new attorney to assist homeowners in foreclosure. Jeffrey Gentes (pictured left) will join the organization on January 19, 2010.

Mr. Gentes grew up and went to college and law school in Connecticut before beginning his law practice in New York City.  Before joining the Center, Mr. Gentes represented homeowners in foreclosure in Staten Island as a member of the Staten Island Legal Services staff.  He is knowledgeable both about foreclosure law and how to access the Housing Affordable Mortgage Programs (HAMP) to prevent homeowners from losing their homes.

Mr. Gentes will be teaching the Foreclosure Clinic, providing assistance to housing counselors, and working with the lawyers on the Pro Bono Referral Panel.
We are also a resource for you. If you have constituents facing foreclosure or suspect they have been victims of housing discrimination, please refer them to our office, 860-247-4400.
We look forward to continuing to work with you and your staff to prevent additional Connecticut homeowners from losing the homes.
