Our area of beautiful southeastern Wisconsin woke up this morning to a twinkling frosting of tiny icy flakes which shimmered in the newly-dawned sunshine. February still has a grasp on winter, but the little glimmers of sunshine and not-quite-so-chilly days give us hope that spring is just around the corner...no matter what a groundhog may have to say! These quieter days of February are a time to reflect on the past year and to dream a bit about the coming months ahead. 2008 was a very busy year, including a national award, time to create new soaps, trips to meet some of the farmers & growers who produce the lovely botanicals for the soaps, and opportunities to meet lots of new people - even some of you who have now become friends as well as soap customers! One of the highlights of the year, and a source of inspiration for the newest Century Farmhouse® soap was the trip to Scotland and the walk along the West Highland Way, a 95-mile trek through the Scottish Highlands. The segment of that trail across the vast and lonely Rannoch Moor provided drama and scenery that inspired Mist of the Moor Soap, made with Scottish gorse petals, purple heather, and Scottish oatmeal. It is scented with chamomile, rose geranium, frankincense, and Damask rose: a combination that is at once mysterious, tranquil, and romantic. This long-awaited trip also included the opportunity to meet Alan and Margaret Russell, who cultivate the beautiful white heather used in Malvina's Wish soap. Alan and Margaret are the only commercial growers of white heather in the UK (www.scottishwhiteheather.com). Watch for more information about their heather as we continue to build the website in the coming months with pages featuring the talented farmers & growers of the botanicals used in the soaps. In 2009 the website will grow to feature "magazine pages" about our talented farmers. Also watch for a lovely online storybook about how the lavender wands are created. As always there'll be some new soap varieties, and I'll even let you in on some of the stories behind the soaps we already include in our list.
The next year promises to be exciting and filled with new experiences, and I hope to be able to share them with you! Have a wonderful February...and be on the lookout for spring. It's right around the corner! Very best wishes to you!
