On a foggy early morning in May, Scotland's Rannoch Moor was quiet and supremely beautiful, covered with last year's heather, brown and crackly and draped in a misty veil that obliterated even the mountains to the west of the trail.  A cuckoo, which seemed to have followed me from Loch Lomond's shore many miles to the south, was calling; its voice hushed a bit by the damp haze.  Everything was silent except for the trilling of the lone cuckoo, the crunch of the stony path underfoot, and the odd trickles of the burns that occasionally crossed the way.
