| Welcome to Okemo Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce
Greetings!
We
had a very busy July! Congratulations to the Ludlow Merchants Association for organizing a great 4th of July fireworks show!! I'm sure the 13th Annual State Zucchini Festival on August 14th will be as successful. This event is on the State's Top 20 Things To Do and has been advertised in Yankee Magazine. Please bring a zucchini baked good to the Festival. Restaurants, please make zucchini specials for the weekend. Thanks. ###
Congratulations to Motel in the Meadow who raised over $3,000 to benefit Race For The Cure. Way to go, Pat! ###
Congratulations to our newest Ambassador, Will Nye from Hunter Lea Gallery and Frameshop in Ludlow. I encourage everyone, including your staff, to take the online tests (even if you don't want a sign). Email lynda.Unwin@state.vt.us for a login and password.

The Chester Innkeepers Association is sponsoring the fourth pot luck supper on August 10 at 6pm at the Stone Hearth Inn and Tavern. All Chester business people are welcome. RSVP Sheldon at the Stone Hearth or Georgette at Hugging Bear. ###
In Ludlow, I sit on the steering committee of the e-Vermont Community Broadband Project which was obtained by Jill Tofferi of the Fletcher Memorial Library. The project is a two-year initiative to help rural Vermont towns take full advantage of the Internet to create jobs, drive school innovation, provide social services, and increase civic involvement. Ludlow has a community forum on http://frontporchforum.com. Ludlow residents, please sign up. There will be a meeting at the Town Hall on August 10th at 7pm to celebrate Ludlow's selection as an e-vermont community and to explain how the e-vermont project can benefit Ludlow. To get involved, contact me at the Chamber, stop by the library and speak with Jill, Michelle at LPCTV, Pam at the Town Hall or Patty at The Book Nook. Be sure to watch the interview of Helen Labun Jordan and Phil Petty, from the Vermont Council on Rural Development e-Vermont Community Broadband Project on www.lpctv.org. Next round of applications will be out in October!
For the Towns of Weston, Ludlow and Plymouth (as well as Towns to the North and South of us), we are making Route 100 a scenic byway. The National Byway Program recognizes and supports outstanding roads. It provides resources to help manage the intrinsic qualities within the boarder Byway corridor to be treasured and shared. The program is about recognition, not regulation. 12 of us on the byway council met on July 9th along with 3 regional development corporations. Our goal is to receive our byway designation this year and apply for funding next year. Our byway will consist of Route 100, Route 100A and Route 103 to connect with Scenic Route 131.
Our 2011 "Taste of Every Season" dining calendar from the Okemo Valley is underway with only 2 available months left; April and May. Please call the Chamber office asap to reserve your month. SPECIAL PROGRAM: You
are
invited to come to our mixer on August 11 from 5:30-7:30pm at the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site and NEW Education Center. Christine
Werneke, Chief Marketing
Officer from the State of Vermont, the Department of Tourism and Marketing,
and the Vermont Ski Areas Association collaborated on research to study
the perception of Vermont and how these perceptions affect decision
making for choosing a vacation. The goals were to: 1. Understand
Vermont's unique strength and areas of opportunity. 2. Identify the
attitudes, needs and behaviors of our customers and 3. Determine the
triggers for selecting a vacation destination. The research shows we
are on target with our visuals in both the guidebook and website, also
on target with our marketing efforts in Connecticut, Massachusetts and
New York. Christine will be sharing the results of the State's branding
study at our mixer and we are also welcoming the
surrounding areas to join us. You MUST CLICK HERE to register with the State to attend. ###
Our guest on lpctv.org this month is Laura Tuttle-Williams and Patrice Johnsen of Calm Moments Spa Services. Here about their backgrounds, their services, and the benefits they've received by being members of the Chamber. ###

Membership Committee News
The membership committee met on July 23rd. We welcome Terry Bascom to the committee.
We had a great FREE educational program last month at Good Commons re: social media. Thank you Tesha for hosting our mixer. We all became fans of the chamber on Facebook and to each other. We learned how Good Commons and Barre Pinske use social media in their businesses. The most important tip was to have a strategy, just like you would before entering into any advertising campaign.
Here's a Testimonial from Laura Tuttle-Williams, LE, of Calm Moments Spa Services: "After attending the educational mixer at Good Commons this month, I booked an appointment for Penny of Inn Victoria to come to Calm Moments Spa for our special of a one hour facial and a one hour massage for $99. Penny enjoyed herself so much that she commented on her business Facebook page, further promoting Calm Moments and then she sent one of her guests the next day for the same package. This is business we would not have had if we didn't attend the Chamber mixer! Thanks so much to Okemo Valley Chamber for all you have done to help me start my small business in Ludlow."
Our next membership committee meeting is scheduled for August 27 at 8:30 at Java Babas. We welcome more members to join our committee.
Don't forget to bring your rack cards to the chamber office.
Get ready for our next "Let's Make A Deal" mixer in October!
*Don't forget to refer a new member to the Chamber to get your FREE 6-month banner ad! Offer ends December 2010.
* You can SAVE hundreds of dollars by using your M2M benefit card at local Okemo Valley businesses!
To get more information about any of these benefits or to add a benefit, please call or email the chamber.

Marketing Committee News
The marketing committee met on July 29th.
We discussed an Okemo Valley app for the iphone, ipod touch and droid. Given the fact that cell phones don't work in Plymouth, Mount Holly or Weston, and the cost, we will pass on this at the present time. We might be able to utilize the app once we get our byway designation.
We're attending the 2011 Boston Globe Travel Show on February 11-13. We are sharing our booth with Stowe. If you would like to participate its $250 day plus lodging. You would be able to hand out your own brochures. Limited availability..
We are also attending the 2011 New York Times Travel Show on February 25-27. We are sharing our booth with Stowe. If you would like to participate its $250 day plus lodging. Limited availability.
Big E | The Okemo Valley will be in the Vermont building at the Big E on September 23 (Massachusetts day) & September 24 (New Hampshire day). This is free (except for lodging at the Sheraton for $105/night). Other days are available if you want to share with other regions. Call Christiane Skinner for other dates/times that are available. 802-828-5905
Let us know if you would like to participate in any of these shows. If you can't attend, we can bring your brochures for $50.
Banner ads are still available on our website. View example. There are 2 different sizes available and room on every single page of
our website. For instance, if you are listed in one category, you might
want a banner ad on another page for more exposure! $150/year. We can change these seasonally.
Enhanced listings are $150/year. They include a full page of pictures, text, links to your website. Restaurants can have their menus on their page. See example. Send Marji pictures and text for this new enhanced feature!
We also discussed having a downloadable coupon page on our website instead of the Okemo Valley coupon book. This will drive more traffic to our website. Send us your coupons!
Vermont Information Board | We will be updating the Vermont Info Board outside the Chamber office shortly. If you want a magnetic square on the board under Lodging, Dining, Crafts, Goods or Recreation, let us know asap. It's $120 from July-July. On the other side, we will be adding pictures. We will be asking guests to send us photos of their favorite things they did while vacationing in the Okemo Valley.
Last but not least is our 2nd Annual Business Showcase at the Fletcher Farm School for the Arts & Crafts on September 22 from 5:30-7:30pm. We will have food, music, and product tables where you can sell your products. Be sure to reserve your table (either inside or out). $99 and can be shared with another business. This will be bigger and better than last year. We have begun promoting it online, newspapers and lpctv!
We need more blog writers. Call the Chamber if you can write something on our blog once or twice a month.
