Monday Memo Banner
From Jack Harnish

Cheers for the Giants!

So the Giants won the Super Bowl and Eli Manning becomes the MVP.  But I will tell you my vote for  "Most Valuable Player"--I'd vote for all those coaches and parents and refs and time-keepers who showed up on Saturday morning for the "3-on-3" basketball program in the CLC with over 80 kids involved. My "Giants" would be the 50 adult volunteers who gave up their Friday night to work Friday Night Lights with over 600 middle schoolers.  My cheer goes up for Kelly Willian and our children and their families who spent Saturday morning serving lunch at Cass Community Social Services.  Instead of Madonna and that confusing hodge-podge of cheerleaders, Egyptians and gymnasts,  I'd rather listen to the three children's choirs who took part in worship Sunday morning or our amazing chancel choir.  Instead of the Super Bowl, I'd rather take in the "Super Soul Sunday" in our contemporary worship service. (Ok...in all honesty, if someone gave me tickets for the big game, I'd probably take them, but you get my point.)  My vote for "Most Valuable Player"would be for the scores of folks who make this church the incredible place that it is. Teachers and nursery workers, fellowship group leaders and mission teams, committee members and work teams--Give me the folks of First Church any day!

Sure, we have our challenges. This week we will be dealing with some of the necessary changes in response to the pledges for 2012, but I believe challenges can become opportunities and we can use this time to strengthen the core of our ministry and direct our resources in the most effective ways.  We are going to have to tighten out belt, but we will do it in ways that maximize the more important parts of our live together and we will do it in hope in God's spirit at work in us. So the season ends for the Patriots and the Giants and all the other also-ran teams, but for us the season goes on and the work of God's people never ends.  I am so proud of this team and I look forward to the game ahead of us.

Judy and I want to thank all of you for your prayers for our two-week old Granddaughter Trudy during her hospitalization.  We hope she will be out of the hospital by Tuesday.  God is good.  We are blessed.

Thanks to all our Giants and Most Valuable Players,

Where I would rather be on Monday Morning,
