From Jack Harnish

He really only had one thing to do.  All he had to do was kick a 32 yard field goal to tie the game.  He had kicked longer field goals before.  It should have been a sure thing.  But instead, he shanked it, far to the left and the Ravens lost their shot at overtime and a chance to go to the Super Bowl. A couple obvious thoughts...

First, every player is important and one person can make all the difference.  Even though all the other players on the team had played their hearts out for the entire game, in the end it all boiled down to one person and one kick.  No matter how strong the team, every individual, every player is important. It's true in football and it's true in the church--ever member matters to the team and every person makes a difference.

Second, he really only had one thing to do--kick field goals.  He trained for it, he was hired for it and his lived for it but when it mattered the most, he missed it.  John Wesley said,  "You have nothing to do but to save souls, therefore spend and be spent in the work."  The one task of the church is to relate persons to God in Jesus Christ and to build the Body of Christ. In this church we say our mission is to "gather, nurture and equip disciples for mission and minsitry".  That's our one task and in the end, if we don't do that, we've missed it. It's important to know the "one thing" we are called to do and to do it.

"Worship Plus Two" is an invitation to focus our live together around the things that matter most--to place worship at the very center of our life and to find intentional ways to (1) feed others, and (2) feed ourselves.  In the end it is up to each player on the team to do his or her part and if we don't there is no one else to do it for us.  I can't wait to be back in worship, back in the pulpit next Sunday to share in the Wesley Covenant Service as an act of commitment--"Resolved:  Cross My Heart and Hope to LIVE!"  See you in worship...
