Help Improve The Quality Of Life In South Alabama

The Community Foundation was created by visionary philanthropists who wanted to support the community beyond their lifetimes. It continues to grow thanks to the generosity of citizens like you.

We pool together charitable gifts to improve the quality of life in South Alabama, so all sizes of donations are welcome.

We also serve as the vessel for community leaders, corporations, and volunteers to share ideas, identify issues, and build the financial resources necessary to make improvements and positively impact our community.

Better Civic Health Means Lower Unemployment

National Conference On Citizenship

A new study released by the National Conference On Citizenship in partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation shows that communities with better civic health have weathered the recent economic recession better than others in similar circumstances.

The research last year identified five measures of civic engagement -- attending meetings, helping neighbors, registering to vote, voting, and volunteering -- that appear to help protect against unemployment.

Bayou Clinic Uses Grant Funding To Expand Service
Rural Clinic Delivers Quality Healthcare

The Bayou Clinic, located in Bayou La Batre, delivers high-quality healthcare at little or no cost to their clients. Dr. Regina Benjamin established the Bayou Clinic to provide "Health Care with Dignity" to the rural community.
Bayou Clinic Patient
After the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, The Community Foundation of South Alabama awarded a grant of $125,000 to the Bayou Clinic to expand its mental health, medical, and social services. The grant was made possible by the Fund for Gulf Communities, a program of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.

The economy of Bayou La Batre, the seafood capital of Alabama, was devastated by the massive oil spill and the moratorium on fishing and shrimping. Many of the residents whose livelihood depended on seafood were left without a job. Overnight, the services at the Bayou Clinic were needed more than ever to care for the mental and physical well-being of the citizens.

The Bayou Clinic has expanded its capacity to offer both physical and mental health services. New diagnostic equipment, an x-ray machine, and additional staff have been added to increase the effectiveness of their healthcare. An emphasis is placed on preventive health and patient responsibility. The Clinic is also looking to increase local awareness of health and wellness issues, by creating a Wi-Fi hotspot signal that will be available 24/7 to the community residents.

Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy Supports Gulf Communities With Grant From Foundation

Free Pharmaceutical Care To People In Need

Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy received a $61,500 grant from The Community Foundation of South Alabama to provide medication, with a focus on chronic diseases, to residents living in the coastal regions of south Mobile and Baldwin counties affected by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The grant was made possible by the Fund for Gulf Communities, a program of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.

Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy is one of only a few charitable pharmacies in the nation. Their goal is to provide free, professional pharmaceutical care to people in need that reside in Mobile, Baldwin, or Escambia counties. Assistance is provided to residents that are uninsured and pre-certified by participating agencies.

Toby and his family moved to Grand Bay in February 2011 to care for his mother. He could not find a job due to the economic downturn created by oil spill and shortly thereafter was diagnosed with lung disease and diabetes. After being referred to Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy, he has been receiving medications with a retail value of over $750 per month. "You all have kept me alive," said Toby.
