| Goodwill Easter Seals Expands Workforce Readiness Training Through Grant From Community Foundation | | |
Workforce Readiness Puts People To Work
Goodwill Easter Seals of the Gulf Coast, Inc. received a grant for $189,000 from The Community Foundation of South Alabama to assist Gulf Coast residents that are still struggling to recover from the economic damage that resulted from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.
The program, entitled Recover Through Education and Employment, is helping coastal residents acquire a G.E.D. and fine tune the skills needed for successful employment. The program is designed to offer adult education services, financial literacy, and workplace readiness training to individuals 17 years of age and older that live in south Mobile County.
Since October, 66 students have participated in the program and attend classes regularly. Improvements in math and reading have been achieved by 45% of the students and 16 students have already passed the G.E.D. exam. Four of the students that passed the G.E.D. are attending a college or technical school. Plus, 10 participants have gained employment or secured a better job after completing the program.

| Youth Grant Allocation Board Awards Grant To Southwest Alabama Regional School For The Deaf And Blind | | $5,000 Grant Will Support Multi-Sensory Room
The Youth Grant Allocation Board of The Community Foundation of South Alabama has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Southwest Alabama Regional School for the Deaf and Blind at a ceremony held on May 6th at the Museum of Mobile.  The funding will support the Southwest Alabama Regional School for the Deaf and Blind, Multi-Sensory Room. This special room creates a supportive environment designed to bridge physical, cognitive, and sensory barriers through the use of specialized equipment such as a vibro-acoustics platform, waterbed, mirror ball, vibro-ball pool, mirrored walls and a projector. Program participation will improve social integration, quality of life, and neurological development for these children. The 2012 Youth Grant Allocation Board Class consisted of 23 students that represent twelve public and private high schools in Mobile and Baldwin counties. |
| Bay Area Food Bank Feeds The Hungry With Grant From Foundation | | Bay Area Food Bank Distributes 45 Tons Of Food
The Bay Area Food Bank received a $72,500 grant from The Community Foundation of South Alabama to provide food distribution at key locations in South Alabama that were adversely impacted by the BP Oil Spill. The grant award was made possible by a contribution received from the Fund for Gulf Communities, a program of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors. 
Since receiving the grant, the Food Bank has distributed nearly 45 tons of food through the Hemley Road Church of Christ and Tri-Coastal Community Outreach, Inc. Together these organizations have fed more than 1,200 people. The new funding has made it possible for the Child Nutrition Team to add two additional sites in Mobile County. The snack program provides after school snacks to children in underserved areas. For approximately 20% of the children, this snack will be their only meal for the rest of the day. For some inner-city locations this number increases to 50%. |
| Monroe County Collects Food To Stamp Out Hunger | | 20th Annual Stamp Out Hunger Day
On May 12, 2012, post office mail carriers in Monroeville and Frisco City collected tons of food from residents on their mail routes. The second Saturday in May, marked the 20th annual Stamp Out Hunger day, the largest single-day food drive in America. Letter carriers across the country picked up bags of non-perishable food products left by household mail boxes, and delivered the food to local food banks.
 Through a grant received from the Corporation for National and Community Service, The Community Foundation of South Alabama has provided an AmeriCorps VISTA member to lend capacity building support to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program of Monroe County for three years.
