Washington County Library Receives Grant To Expand Public Wi-Fi Service | | Grant Helps Library Broaden Public Wi-Fi Access
In January the Washington County Public library received a $10,000 grant from the Community Endowment Fund at the Foundation to upgrade its Wi-Fi infrastructure. The funding will allow the Library to expand its Wi-Fi signal throughout the indoor facility and up to 150 yards outside the building.
Washington County is in an economically underdeveloped area with a population of 17,581. With 27% of the children under the age of 18 living in poverty, computers and internet access are luxuries few can afford.
The Washington County Public Library is the only location in the county where the citizens can access computers and free internet.
Rural areas of South Alabama have limited access to broadband technology and public Wi-Fi hotspots. Providing access to high-speed internet and Wi-Fi hotspots is critical to promoting economic development, expanding educational opportunities, and providing access to government services.
