| Community Foundation Grant Allows Child To Lead An Active Life | | | United Way Baldwin County
At Summerdale School, fifth grader Lindsey Allen is eager to show her visitor how rapidly she can navigate the playground. Despite a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes 18-months ago, the ten-year old, petite blond moves from slide to monkey bars to jungle gym with ease. And a grant from The Community Foundation of South Alabama to United Way of Baldwin County is about to make Lindsey's life even easier. United Way of Baldwin County received funding for United Medical Partnership for Children, a program affording medical, dental and vision care to uninsured or underinsured Baldwin County public school children. Lindsey will receive an insulin pump, eliminating the need for up to four insulin shots per day. "It will help manage my blood sugar and it's easier to do sports and stuff that I love," Lindsey said. "Like when I go to a sleepover, I won't need help with my shots, I can just do it myself." |

Give A Gift That Will Last Forever
As the year draws to a close you may be searching for ways to help your community and at the same time gain a tax advantage. Gifts made through the Community Foundation can be tailored to fit your charitable intentions and address your financial concerns.
Use IRA Distribution To Make Charitable Contributions
If you are over 70 years of age, you can transfer up to $100,000, tax-free, from your IRA to an endowment fund at the Community Foundation.
The Tax Relief Act extended for 2011 permits individuals over age 70 to use IRA distributions up to $100,000 to make charitable contributions and avoid paying income tax on that amount.
Normally, the proceeds of a tax-deferred investment would be taxed as income before you could make a charitable donation.
- Do by December 16 to allow for paperwork
Donate Appreciated Securities
Donate stocks, bonds or mutual fund shares to the Community Foundation and you will not owe capital gains tax. Plus, if you have owned the security for more than a year, you can deduct the full market value, not just the amount you originally invested.
- No capital gains taxes and a potentially bigger
write-off - To initiate gifts of stock do by December 20
Need A Last Minute Solution - Give Online By giving online to the Community Foundation you can make contributions until 12:00 midnight on December 31 and you don't pay the bill until 2012.
