Grant one of six awarded by Fund for Gulf Communities
The Community Foundation of South Alabama has received a $4 million grant from the Fund for Gulf Communities to continue supporting residents across the Gulf Coast still struggling to recover financially, emotionally and physically from the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The award was made in the first round of grants by the Fund, which was created through an anonymous donation to Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors to enhance the resiliency of the Gulf Coast's diverse communities and address some of the unmet needs of individuals, families, and children significan tly affected by the spill and its aftermath.
The Fund will achieve this by working with and funding respected nonprofit organizations, such as The Community Foundation of South Alabama, that have strong ties to the region and connections to community-based organizations providing direct services to people in need.
"One year after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, many have forgotten the devastating effects of the disaster and its impact upon Gulf Coast residents, its economy and the environment. Receiving this grant is meaningful because Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors recognizes the long term recovery needs of the Gulf Coast and the proven ability of the Community Foundation to serve our neighbors," said Alvertha B. Penny, President and CEO, The Community Foundation of South Alabama. "The Fund for Gulf Communities grant award will allow the Foundation to enhance the capacity of organizations addressing the unmet basic needs of individuals, families and children."

| Indian Springs Elementary School
A grant from The Community Foundation of South Alabama made possible the Smart Walk to School program at Indian Springs Elementary School held in May. Twenty students, parents, teachers and a representative from the Alabama Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School program participated in the high energy walk.
Smart Walk, a program of Smart Coast, focused upon promoting safety, physical activity and concern for the environment. The outing provided parents the opportunity to teach their children the proper way to cross the street and other pedestrian safety rules.
