University of Alabama Honors Students Visit South Alabama | | |
Gulf Coast Recovery
Twelve honors students from the University of Alabama traveled to south Alabama this February to learn about the recovery of the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of the oil spill. The students met with the staff of The Community Foundation, as well as community leaders to learn about the short term and long term affects of the catastrophic man-made disaster.
Board member, Murray Cape and project manager Michael Dillaber of the Foundation traveled with the students to Bayou La Batre and introduced them to civic leaders and members of the Asian community.
"I'm a journalism student, and I covered the legislative fallout of the oil spill from Washington this summer. I've also been a frequent visitor to the region over the years as some members of my extended family live in Daphne.
But my visit to the Gulf in February was an eye-opener. For the first time since the spill, I heard the pained voices within a community. From Washington, it was easy to focus on numbers - gallons of oil spilled, potential fines against BP, etc. - but the human toll was never apparent. My visit helped to illuminate the true impact of the spill, and, more importantly, it helped to reveal the admirable resolve of the people of South Alabama to come back stronger."

The Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council (SAWDC) will receive $300,000 from the Federal Government Social Innovation Fund to develop innovative approaches to training and career development.
This investment will allow SAWDC to establish and support workforce partnerships supporting maritime, aerospace, healthcare, and process manufacturing industries.
The Community Foundation of South Alabama in partnership with the City of Mobile, the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce, Mobile Works, Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance and Mobile Area Education Foundation formed SAWDC, a nonprofit organization to develop workforce solutions for the eight counties of South Alabama.
The Foundation acted as an incubator for the fledgling nonprofit formed in 2006, providing both financial and in-kind support. Today, SAWDC is an independent nonprofit and a strategic partner of The Community Foundation.
