Earned Income Tax Credit Can Put Money In Your Pocket
If you earned less than $48,362 from wages, self-employment or farming last year, you may qualify for a refundable tax credit called the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. But you must file a federal income tax return claiming the credit to get it.

You could be eligible to get more money back from the IRS - as much as $5,666. EITC can be a big financial boost for working people hit by hard economic times. Many individuals who saw their incomes drop in 2010 may qualify for the first time.
VITA Card 2011

The IRS estimates four of five eligible people claim and get their EITC. Unlike other tax credits, both EITC eligibility and the amount of the credit is based on several factors such as the source and amount of your income, or combined incomes if married, whether you have qualifying children and how many.

You may qualify for EITC even if you had no federal tax withheld or are not otherwise required to file. However, you must file a federal income tax return and you must specifically claim the credit to get it.

For more information visit www.irs.gov/eitc. Call 211 or 1-888-421-1266 to locate Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites in your community.

A Tribute To Robert Hodgson

The Community Foundation pays tribute to Robert Hodgson who passed away January 3rd at the age of 83.

Robert Hodgson 1-11

Mr. Hodgson served as the Chairman of The Community Foundation Board from 2002 to 2004 and was on the Board of Directors for 13 years. His dedication and service to our community will be sorely missed.

During his tenure as Board Chair, The Community Foundation was selected as one of six community foundations nationwide to participate in The Kresge Foundation "Partnership to Build Community Capital."

Through this program, The Kresge Foundation provided $2 million in matching funds for 20 local nonprofit organizations that raised $6 million to create agency endowments at The Community Foundation of South Alabama.

Agency endowments provide a way for nonprofit organizations to grow assets and provide a steady source of revenue to meet current and future needs.

Community Foundation Grant Provides Food For 800 Families In Bayou La Batre

A grant from The Community Foundation made it possible for Tri-Coastal Community Outreach and Feed The Children to provide food for 800 families and 1,651 children in Bayou La Batre. Through this partnership, food was made available to families struggling as a result of the Gulf Coast Oil spill.

TriCoastal Grant Boy With Bread

Bayou La Batre is known as the "Seafood Capital of Alabama" and the main source of income for this region is the seafood industry.  Due to the oil spill and economic downturn, many hardworking and self-employed heads of household found themselves for the first time unable to provide for their families.

Carolyn Thompson of Tri-Coastal Community Outreach contacted Feed The Children which resulted in the delivery of two tractor-trailer loads of food. Feed The Children is a nonprofit relief organization that specializes in food distribution to families in need. Located in Grand Bay, Alabama, Tri-Coastal Community Outreach seeks to meet the immediate needs of families as well as helping them find long term solutions to their problems.

By working together we can address the economic effects of the oil spill disaster and sustain long term recovery efforts that are critical to the health of our community.
