The Ballet & Theatre Arts Performing Companies (BTAPC) located in Choctaw County is a little theatre, dance company and community chorus that has brought the performing arts to rural southwest Alabama since 1980. They strive to make the arts available to all the people in their community and especially those who are poverty stricken.
Through scholarship classes and "Adopt A Child For the Arts" programs they are reaching underprivileged children in their region. BTAPC teaches most the children at Southern Choctaw Elementary School by providing free classes at school. Children that desire to go further in dance, gymna stics but can not financially afford the cost are offered scholarships. The scholarship program covers all the costs for the participating child including transportation, dance equipment and tuition.

| A Safe Place For Christmas | | |
By: Jennifer Hyde, AmeriCorps VISTA for the South Alabama Community Network, Clarke County
During a time of an ever-growing "to do list" and never ending "Children's wish lists"; the holiday season can be a daunting task for the most "normal" of families. The ability to relax, enjoy and celebrate the season often gets lost in the hustle and bustle of things.
However, for many people the very basics in life are at the top of their list. Things like safety, food, and comfort outrank the latest gadget or gizmo. For these individuals, trips to the mall are replaced by trips to the shelter and food banks.
Often times, home is not the place to be for the holidays due to an abusive husband or a violent partner. When these abused women decide to leave, Harriet's House is there to lend a helping hand year round. Harriet's House is a safe refuge for battered women and their children.
