Applications Due By June 4
The South Alabama Community Network, an AmeriCorps VISTA project, is recruiting VISTA members from Baldwin, Choctaw and Washington Counties.
Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) members receive a living allowance of approximately $9,700 per year, health insurance and can choose between an Education Award ($5,350) or an End-of-Service-Stipend ($1,500) at the completion of one year of service.

| Youth Grant Allocation Board Awards $7,500 In Grants For Youth Crime Prevention Programs | |
The Youth Grant Allocation Board of The Community Foundation of South Alabama awarded grants totaling $7,500 for Youth Crime Prevention Programs at a ceremony held at the Museum of Mobile on May 2nd.
The Youth Grant Allocation Board (YGAB) created the Youth Crime Prevention initiative to fund programs providing a safe facility for young people ages 11 to 18 that focus upon character building and fun, engaging recreational activities.
The Youth Grant Allocation Board awarded $2,500 to the Dearborn YMCA for the Teen Achievers program that offers service learning projects, mentoring, career path counseling, test preparation, tutoring, college tours and team building activities.
 Learning for Life received $5,000 for the Juvenile Redirection program designed to give young adults a second chance to accept responsibility for their mistakes and move forward. The Juvenile Redirection program is a collaborative effort between the Mobile County Juvenile Court and Learning for Life. The program accepts at-risk youth offenders from the Strickland Youth Center. Participants are engaged in structured activities designed to increase self esteem, improve decision making skills and change the young person's perception of the legal system.

The YGAB Class of 2010 consists of 27 students that represent sixteen public and private high schools in Mobile and Baldwin Counties. Gavin Snyder and Hannah Hill were selected as Mr. and Ms. YGAB Of The Year from the 2010 class based upon achievements such as test performance, attendance, fundraising and leadership. Board members recognized for 3 years of service were Amanda Adams and Lester Jones.

| Disaster Relief Fund Will Provide Oil Drilling Catastrophe Assistance | |
The Community Foundation of South Alabama is accepting donations to the Disaster Relief Fund to provide assistance to the coastal communities of South Alabama impacted by the BP oil drilling disaster. A river of oil is pouring into the Gulf of Mexico and the size of the spill continues to grow.
Your tax deductible contribution will support nonprofit organizations that provide critical response activities and long term support to affected communities. The Fund will provide the financial resources necessary to assess the environmental impact, coordinate effective responses, clean-up efforts and the long term recovery efforts critical to the health of our region.

| Small Business Administration Disaster Loans Available For Qualified Businesses And Nonprofit Associations | | |
Small businesses along the Alabama Gulf Coast that have been impacted by the oil spill can now apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loans at the Small Business Administration centers that have opened in Bayou La Batre and Gulf Shores.
The SBA disaster loans are available to qualified businesses and nonprofit associations in the approved counties of: Mobile, Baldwin, Clarke, Escambia, Monroe and Washington.
Small businesses may obtain loan information by calling the SBA Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955 (800-877-8339 for the hearing impaired).
