South Alabama Community Network Receives Approval For Second Year As AmeriCorps VISTA Project

Volunteer In Service To America Members

Needed From Local Communities
 

The South Alabama Community Network, a project of  The Community Foundation of South Alabama, has been accepted for support by the Corporation for National and Community Service for a second year utilizing the services of AmeriCorps*VISTA members.

  
VISTA_logoThe South Alabama Community Network will provide one place where civic leaders, nonprofit organizations, volunteers, academia, business and citizens converge. This "Network of Networks" will bring together people with a common interest in building a stronger community through information sharing, advocacy and collaboration.

 

The AmeriCorps*VISTA project will recruit members from local communities in the eight counties of South Alabama which includes Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Escambia, Mobile, Monroe and Washington counties.

 

Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA) members receive a living allowance of approximately $9,700 per year, health insurance and can choose between an Education Award ($4,725) or an End-of-Service-Stipend ($1,200) at the completion of one year of service.

Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program
For Domestic Violence Survivors

Penelope House is a domestic violence shelter that serves Mobile and Washington counties and will be assisting in the distribution of Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP) funds to domestic violence survivors in these counties.

 

Any domestic violence survivors in the Mobile and Washington County needing assistance with homelessness prevention or rapid rehousing should be referred to Penelope House.  

 

Any non-domestic violence persons needing this assistance should be referred to 211 or to the local homeless coalition.

 

The focus of HPRP is housing stabilization. This program is designed to provide temporary financial assistance and/or services to persons who are homeless or would be homeless but for this assistance and can remain stably housed after this temporary assistance ends. This program is not a mortgage assistance program nor is it intended for long-term and/or intensive support.
