Elektra: Auction Highlight
Gourmet dinner cruise for 10 aboard the luxurious Spirit of Two Thousand Ten
We are so looking forward to seeing you at Simply Elektra! In addition to raising much-needed funds for the choir's future projects, the main purpose of this evening is to simply show our gratitude to you for your support and to allow you to spend an enjoyable evening simply in the company of Elektra.
While our focus for Simply Elektra is on thanking you for your support and spending time with you, there will be a silent and live auction of a few select items including manuscripts of music commissioned for Elektra, and beautiful paintings from local artists. Our wine raffle is always a favourite, and this year, we will have over 40 wines selected by connoisseur, Tim Higgs. (Our Marketing Director won this two years ago and still raves about it!)
You could sail away on a 4 hour dinner cruise! | The show-stopper of the live auction, however, has to be a 4 hour cruise and gourmet dinner for 10 aboard the fabulously luxurious Spirit of Two Thousand Ten. This kind of item doesn't come along very often so we wanted to give you plenty of warning!
Imagine: You (and 9 of your closest friends) board the magnificent Spirit of Two Thousand Ten as the sun begins to kiss the ocean at sunset. Your party enjoys a pre-dinner cocktail in the glorious cockpit as your "yacht for the evening" slips her moorings and heads out into Coal Harbour.Pre-dinner drinks here! |
You take in the beauty of Vancouver (which is best seen from the water, at sunset) as the sun paints the mountains and skyscrapers in hues of pink and gold.
The fresh sea air (and perhaps another cocktail) remind you that it is indeed dinner time! You make your way to the beautifully set main lounge where a gourmet repast awaits, and settle into an evening of amazing food, conversation, and scenery.
It's the recipe for an unforgettable evening, and it's been generously donated to our live auction! This would be the perfect way to mark an anniversary or important birthday, or to just make an ordinary day into something extraordinary. The cruise and dinner package is valued at $8000, and we can easily see a group of friends getting together to bid on this exciting item. Visit the website to view the entire gallery of photos from this gorgeous ship - then start planning your bidding strategy! You and 9 of your friends can enjoy dinner here! |
Tickets for Simply Elektra are $125, for which a donation receipt for $50 will be issued. Romance: Schumann, Brahms, & Fauré An Afternoon Salon as part of VISI's SONGFIRE Festival of Song
At this week's rehearsal, Rena Sharon, head of the Vancouver International Song Institute, came by and shared with Elektra some of her insights into the connection of text and music that makes all vocal music such a powerful musical form. "You are all singers of Art Song!" she declared, "The only difference is that choral music is harmonized."
It was an inspiring and thought-provoking mini-lecture, and it left us energized and excited about our upcoming Romance concert. (It was only a few days later that Rena received a nomination for the 2010 YWCA Women of Distinction Award in Arts, Culture & Design. Congratulations, Rena!)
We are particularly pleased to partner with the Vancouver International Song Institute (VISI) for Romance. The performance is part of VISI's SONGFIRE Festival of Song, a new collaboration with a constellation of Vancouver arts organizations that highlights song in all of its forms. VISI faculty member and soprano, Martha Guth, will be featured as soloist for Romance, alongside harpist Heidi Krutzen, Ben Kinsman and Oliver de Clercq on French horn, and pianist, Stephen Smith.
The central work of the concert is Brahm's Four Songs for Women's Chorus, two horns and harp Op. 17. (Click the link to hear a performance on YouTube, as sung by members of the Swedish Radio Choir.) Lyrical, subdued and full of warm nostalgia, the vocal lines are masterfully set amongst the rich sonority of their accompaniment. Members of MIRA, Elektra's mentorship program for high school-aged singers, will join the choir for the Brahms as well as in some works by Fauré.
Romance offers an early summer afternoon's entertainment, and an invitation into a musical age when fantasy, imagination, and a quest for adventure in far away lands played an important role. Come and be born away into the golden reveries of Romance: Schumann, Brahms, & Fauré.
Romance: Schumann, Brahms, & Fauré Sunday, June 6, 2010 ~ 3 pm Ryerson United Church 2195 W 45th Ave, Vancouver $26|$20
Tickets to Romance are available through Ticketmaster (604.280.3311), through the Elektra office (604.739.1255.), and through choir members.

Elektra at PODIUM in Saskatoon May 20 - 23
As this is hitting your in box we can safely report that all Elektra members have now safely arrived in Saskatoon for the Association of Canadian Choral Communities' biennial PODIUM conference. Some of our singers faced a 9 hour delay (courtesy of Mother Nature) at the Calgary airport, and didn't arrive until 4 a.m. Friday! At this point the choir has had their first rehearsal and is preparing for their first workshop, bright and early on Saturday morning. Come here us sing, and please stop by and say hello! PODIUM is always a great time to meet our fellow-Canadian choristers and conductors, but this year's event is even more special.
The winners of the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs will be announced at PODIUM's closing banquet - and Elektra is a finalist in the Equal Voices - Women category. It's going to be an exciting time. Watch for blog posts and photos to come!
