Elektra: A Fundraising Dinner for Elektra
Simply Wonderful!
Directly following our Sunday afternoon performance of Romance, Elektra is inviting you and yours to join us at Vancouver's Terminal City Club. It's an opportunity to celebrate the close of a banner season for the choir, raise a glass (or two!), discuss your favourite music from the afternoon's concert (which you can read about below), and celebrate the many accomplishments of Elektra this year.
A tempting dinner (think wild mushroom risotto, miso maple glazed sablefish, and a dessert involving sinful amounts of white chocolate and raspberry mouse in delightful combination), is only the start to an evening of great banter, music, and enjoyment. Maestro Bramwell Tovey and Lana Penner-Tovey, will be our gracious Masters of Ceremonies, and, while we don't want to give away too many secrets, you may look forward to special performances by the choir, as well as a sprinkling of solo appearances from select Elektra members.
In addition to raising much-needed funds for the choir's future projects, the main purpose of this evening is to simply show our gratitude to you for your support and to allow you to spend an enjoyable evening simply in the company of Elektra. While our focus for Simply Elektra is on thanking you for your support and spending time with you, there will be a silent and live auction of a few select items including manuscripts of music commissioned for Elektra, and beautiful paintings from local artists. Our show-stopping wine raffle is always a favourite, and this year, we will have over 40 wines selected by connoisseur, Tim Higgs.
Tickets for "Simply Elektra" are $125, for which a donation receipt for $50 will be issued. Tickets may be purchased by calling Bernice Slemko at the Elektra office: 604-739-1255 or emailing manager@elektra.ca. Consider bringing your Elektra-loving friends and making up a table of ten. The evening starts at 6:15 pm.
Your presence on June 6th will help Elektra continue to bring inspiration, joy, and comfort to the many, many people around the world who love Elektra's glorious music. We hope that you can join us for this evening and look forward to spending time with you, our supporter and friend.

Romance: Schumann, Brahms, & Fauré An Afternoon Salon With Elektra Women's Choir and Guests
We are planning a unique concert to close their season. Romance: Schumann, Brahms, & Fauré, is a glittering exploration of the music of the Romantic Era, presented in the format of an afternoon salon, complete with a roster of talented guest artists whose solo performances will enrich an already abundant program. Morna has opened a treasure chest of repertoire that includes harp, French horn, and piano accompaniment to showcase Elektra's lustrous sound.
We are particularly pleased to partner with the Vancouver International Song Institute (VISI) for Romance. The performance is part of VISI's SONGFIRE Festival of Song, a new collaboration with a constellation of Vancouver arts organizations that highlights song in all of its forms. VISI faculty member and soprano, Martha Guth, will be featured as soloist for Romance, alongside harpist Heidi Krutzen, Ben Kinsman and Oliver de Clercq on French horn, and pianist, Stephen Smith.
The central work of the concert is Brahm's Four Songs for Women's Chorus, two horns and harp Op. 17. Lyrical, subdued and full of warm nostalgia, the vocal lines are masterfully set amongst the rich sonority of their accompaniment. Members of MIRA, Elektra's mentorship program for high school-aged singers, will join the choir for the Brahms as well as in some works by Fauré.
Romance offers an early summer afternoon's entertainment, and an invitation into a musical age when fantasy, imagination, and a quest for adventure in far away lands played an important role. Come and be born away into the golden reveries of Romance: Schumann, Brahms, & Fauré.
Romance: Schumann, Brahms, & Fauré Sunday, June 6, 2010 ~ 3 pm Ryerson United Church 2195 W 45th Ave, Vancouver $26|$20
Tickets to Romance are available through Ticketmaster (604.280.3311), through the Elektra office (604.739.1255.), and through choir members.
