A performance by Vancouver's renowned Elektra Women's Choir is an escape from the ordinary to an extraordinary world of melody and beauty. The 40 singers of Elektra are proud to be contributing their voices in a benefit concert for the University Women's Club on October 2nd (8 pm) at Surrey's Wheelhouse Theatre.
"Our concert will transport the listener to lake sides and gardens, sea shores and cathedrals in music ranging from Canadian compositions and arrangements to signature Hungarian and Estonian works", explains Artistic Director (and Surrey resident), Morna Edmundson. "I'm particularly pleased that we're able to include the Magnificat by young Canadian composer Christine Donkin. This haunting piece is catching on like wildfire in the choral world and is always an audience favourite."
The choir's 90-minute program will also include a taste of Canadian folk songs - two from Newfoundland, one from Cape Breton, and the jaunty V'la l'bon vent, a voyageur song from the early days of Quebec. Elektra's outstanding accompanist Stephen Smith contributes his arrangement of Scarborough Fair, recently released on the choir's ninth CD, Elektra's Garden.
Elektra's final set will open with a rousing medley by Smith of cheerful and familiar songs on the colour blue: think Blue Moon, Blue Skies... and more! Then it's My Funny Valentine and It's a Grand Night for Singing - the perfect way to end this performance by one of Canada's finest choral ensembles.
The White Rock Surrey Club of The Canadian Federation of University Women is a voluntary, non-profit, self-funded organization. The are dedicated to the promotion of fellowship, community involvement, the support of education, and the betterment of women's lives. Proceeds for Elektra's performance will go towards the club's educational and community projects in Surrey and White Rock.
