Elektra Adds Angelic Voices to Yuletide Fires

Yuletide FiresElektra is thrilled to provide the angelic voices for the upcoming performances of Chor Leoni Men's Choir's Yuletide Fires on December 20 and 21. The centrepiece of this concert is Respighi's Lauda per la Nativitą del Signore, written for mixed choir and soloists. Featured as Mary in this production is soprano, Mariateresa Magisano.

Ms. Magisano has a busy career on opera stages around the world and has sung major roles for Vancouver Opera in the past. She will sing the role of Michaėla in the VOA's upcoming production of Bizet's Carmen.

Elektra is particularly happy to recognize choir member, soprano Grace Fatkin, who will sing the role as the Angel in this wonderfully pastoral cantata. This concert glows with the warmth of candlelight on old icons and moonlight on the gentle hills of Tuscany in a definitely Italianate Christmas production.

"It's an irresistible combination of forces," says Diane Loomer, Chor Leoni's founder and Artistic Director. "The glorious voices of Elektra, the warmth of a small chamber orchestra, the beauty of internationally known Magisano's voice - all combined with the lustrous sound of Chor Leoni. Come and enjoy!"

The Vancouver performances on December 20 are sold out, but there are tickets available for the December 21 performance at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Surrey/White Rock. This is a spectacular venue for a concert: great site lines, terrific acoustics - and free parking!

In this first ever Tapestry International, Elektra will host outstanding women's choirs from Canada, Japan, and the United States. Our guest choirs are Brilliant Harmony (Tokyo, Japan) under the direction of Ko Matsushita, the University Choir Women of Western Washington University (Bellingham, WA) directed by Tim Fitzpatrick, and the Balkan Babes (Victoria, BC), recent winners of the Pan-Cultural category of the 2008 CBC Choral Competition. In addition to the guest choirs, twelve auditioned high-school-aged singers from the Lower Mainland will join in the massed choir repertoire under Elektra's Mira mentorship program for young singers.

Over the four-day schedule, the choirs will also rehearse together toward Exhilaration! Celebratory Finale, a grand concert in Vancouver's magnificent Christ Church Cathedral in which over 120 singers will join their voices under the leadership of each of the conductors.

Child of Grace CD cover
Carol Swanson, reviewer for ChristmasReviews.com says, "Child of Grace is an excellent seasonal CD that embodies grace and enchantment. You will not recognize most of the numbers, and you may not yet be familiar with this exciting ensemble; still, if you yearn for classical excellence that will keep you enraptured long after the Christmas tree is back in the closet, this offering may be the perfect one for you!"

Ceremony of Carols CD coverCeremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten-surely the most famous piece ever written for choir and harp-is a series of musical gems that is exuberant, innocent, and moving.  Concierto di Navidad by Paul Csonka features Spanish sensuousness and catchy Cuban rhythms. In Dancing Day, John Rutter retells the central event of Christmas simply and vividly in a tapestry of dance tunes. With the fabulous harpist, Rita Costanzi.
