News from the Greater Community

Kids' Tech University

Kids' Tech University is an all-day event at Virginia Tech University in January, February, March, and April. Each day consists of an interactive session, centered on answering a question about the world around us, and a hands-on component, which features the Virginia Tech professors, students, clubs, and community. Kids can take part in the virtual labs and forum after the all-day event to continue to cultivate their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Click here for more information.

Greetings!

Our next Spirit Night at Mackenzie Grace is coming up just in time for holiday shopping. This new store is located at 11624 West Broad Street, just a few doors down from Regal Cinemas at Short Pump Town Center. Bring this flyer on Saturday, December 3, between 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM and 15% of the sale will go to Colonial Trail.

Calling All Dads
Are you ready for an out of this world experience? Today is the final deadline to send in your RSVP and $3.00 per person for our stellar Dads Night on Tuesday, December 6. Join us for a pre-mission launch pizza meal at 6:00 PM, and then blast off on a scavenger hunt. You'll head home with a framed photo of your outer space adventures and memories for a lifetime!

Email  Tracey Florence, the PTA Dads Night Chair, to volunteer or sign up on nList.

Math and Technology Night
Mark you calendars and save the date for the CTES Math and Technology Night on Wednesday, January 19 at 6:30 PM. The PTA is hosting this fun family night to explore and learn more about math and technology by playing games, watching cool technology demonstrations, and digging deep into the meaning of the relationship between a circle's diameter and its circumference, better known as Pi - and by that we mean PIE!

Bring the whole family to enjoy pie desserts and further your understanding of math and technology practices.

We need volunteers for this event, so if you're interested in the planning, setting up, staffing a table, or anything else, please contact Nancy Chazen.

International Night
One of our favorite CTES Family Programs events - International Night - is coming up on Tuesday, February 28th. Students and their families look forward to this special night of learning about other countries and their traditions, and of course sampling their food. Information will be sent home soon, but we need your assistance to help plan the event, to participate in the event, and to volunteer at the event. Please contact Beth Zorns or Nancy Chazen for more information.

EcoFest Update
EcoFest is our annual family-friendly eco-themed educational carnival on April 27th, 2012 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. To continue the tradition of making this event super fun and successful we need a lot of CTES parents to help. A huge thank you to the great group of parents who have already joined team.

We still have 3 open Coordinator positions to fill:
  • Site Facilitator Coordinator: creating and overseeing the site map for the event (including electrical needs, tables, recycle cans, etc.) and overseeing the set up and clean up of the event
  • Decorations Coordinator: determine and provide decorations for the event as needed
  • Admissions Coordinator: oversees all items related to the admission (creating flyer, tickets, assembling pre-order packets) of the event
If you're interested in these positions and would like to know more, please contact the EcoFest co-chairs, Catherine Curran or Nancy Chazen. If you'd like to be a part of the Team and help out in other ways, please contact the EcoFest Volunteer's Coordinator, Tracey Florence

Our next planning meeting is Friday, December 9th at 10:30 AM in the school conference room closest to the Library so please join us to plan the fun.

Coats for Kids
Thanks to all the cubs to helped make the Coats for Kids Coat Drive a success. CTES collected over 40 coats which were donated to help kids who need a coat this winter.
