COLLECT OF THE DAY

Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

REFLECTION

A nineteenth-century teacher in the Celtic world, Alexander Scott, used the analogy of royal garments. Apparently in his day, royal garments were woven through with a costly thread, a thread of gold. And if somehow the golden thread were taken out of the garment, the whole garment would unravel. So it is, he said, with the image of God woven into the fabric of our being. If it were taken out of us, we would unravel. We would cease to be. So the image of God is not simply a characteristic of who we are, which may or may not be there. . . . The image of God is the essence of our being. It is the core of the human soul. We are sacred not because we have been baptized or because we belong to one faith tradition over another. We are sacred because we have been born.

But what does it mean to be made in the image of God? In part, it is to say that wisdom is deep within us, deeper than the ignorance of what we have done or become. It is to say that the passion of God for what is just and right is deep within, deeper than any apathy or participation in wrong that has crippled us. To be made in the image of God is to say that creativity is at the core of our being, deeper than any barrenness that has dominated our lives and relationships. And above all else, it is to say that love and the desire to give ourselves away to one another in love is at the heart of who we are, deeper than any fear or hatred that holds us hostage. Deep within us is a longing for union, for our genesis is in the One from whom all things have come. Our home is in the Garden, and deep within us is the yearning to hear its song again.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS...AND CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF GRACE  Join us on Saturday, October 15, in Memorial Hall from 9:00am. to 1:00pm for Blessings of Grace. We will break into small groups to create individual expressions of what Grace means to each of us. Each group will have a leader and focus on a different medium, from collages to baking bread for Eucharist to word montages to hanging wind messages. Or bring your own ideas for expressing how you feel blessed by being a part of the Grace community and its history. Then we'll all join together for a soup lunch and a chance to share our creations. And... on that Sunday, October 16, the Church School classes will participate in related activities.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO GRACE!

On Saturday, November 5 we commemorate the 150th anniversary of Grace Church, starting with a special anniversary service with Bishop Sisk and confirmation at 3:00 pm.  A reception honoring the confirmands and our anniversary will follow. The celebration continues that evening from 7:30 - 11:00pm!  Come and toast our anniversary and enjoy soup-to-dessert hors d'oeuvres, live music by the CoverUp Band and great company!  Tickets for the evening party are $50 per person.  RSVP to the church office with payment (cash, check or credit card) by October 20.

ANNUAL FALL HIKE

The annual Grace Church Fall Hike will take place this year on Sunday afternoon, October 16.  We will meet at 2:00pm at the barn at St. John's-in-the-Wilderness, take a short drive to a trailhead, and enjoy an easy walk through the autumn woods of Harriman Park. We'll then return to the cozy barn for a potluck supper in front of the big stone fireplace.  Besides fall colors, we may see native American rock shelters, signs of Revolutionary War history, old iron mines, streams and ponds, and interesting wildlife. This is Win Perry's 46th year as leader.   While walking and talking, you will get to know another side of your fellow parishioners.  Great for the entire family!

If you go:
* Palisades Parkway to Exit 14; left on Willow Grove Road; follow it for 3 miles.
* After crossing two branches of Lake Welch, turn left at Episcopal Church sign and look for barn on left.
* Allow a half hour from Nyack. Meet at the barn at 2pm
* Bring something to share for supper.
* If you have questions, call Win at 358-0552

PARTING THOUGHT

There is a marvelous story of a man who once stood before God, his heart breaking from the pain and injustice in the world.  "Dear God," he cried out, "look at all the suffering, the anguish and idstress in your world.  Why don't you send help?"  God responded, "I did send help.  I sent you."
