You know that God is everywhere, which is a great truth; wherever God dwells there is heaven, and you may feel sure that all which is glorious is near His Majesty.
Remember what St Augustine tells us-I think it comes form his Meditations; how he sought God in many places and at last found the Almighty within himself. Do you consider it of slight importance for a soul given to wandering thoughts to realize this truth and to see that it has no need to go to heaven in order to speak to the eternal Father or to enjoy his company? Nor is it requisite to raise the voice to address him, for he hears every whisper, however low.
Teresa of Avila, quoted in The Joy of the Saints: Spiritual Readings throughout the Year, edited by Robert Llewelyn (Templegate, 1988).

COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS...AND CELEBRATING 150 YEARS OF GRACE Join us on Saturday, October 15, in Memorial Hall from 9:00am. to 1:00pm for Blessings of Grace. We will break into small groups to create individual expressions of what Grace means to each of us. Each group will have a leader and focus on a different medium, from collages to baking bread for Eucharist to word montages to hanging wind messages. Or bring your own ideas for expressing how you feel blessed by being a part of the Grace community and its history. Then we'll all join together for a soup lunch and a chance to share our creations. And... on that Sunday, October 16, the Church School classes will participate in related activities.
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO GRACE!

ANNUAL FALL HIKE
The annual Grace Church Fall Hike will take place this year on Sunday afternoon, October 16. We will meet at 2:00pm at the barn at St. John's-in-the-Wilderness, take a short drive to a trailhead, and enjoy an easy walk through the autumn woods of HarrimanPark. We'll then return to the cozy barn for a potluck supper in front of the big stone fireplace. Besides fall colors, we may see native American rock shelters, signs of Revolutionary War history, old iron mines, streams and ponds, and interesting wildlife. This is Win Perry's 46th year as leader. While walking and talking, you will get to know another side of your fellow parishioners. Great for the entire family!
If you have questions, call Win at 358-0552

WHAT IS A SEARCH COMMITTEE? At the September vestry meeting, Moriah Olsen was appointed to be our Search Committee Chair. The Episcopal Church has a unique process to call the next priest to serve. The priests are neither appointed by the Bishop (although they must be approved) nor are they voted upon by the congregation (although as much as possible the congregation participates). The search committee ideally is made up of representatives from all areas of our congregation. Since it is limited to 9-12 people that will be our challenge. If you are interested in serving on such a committee for 12 - 18 months, please let the Wardens know or email Moriah (moriahso@Yahoo.com) by Oct. 11.

Reverie and Invocation
By William Carlos Williams
Whether the rain comes down or there be sunny days the sleets of January or the haze of autumn afternoons, when we dream of our youth our gaze grows mellow, wise man or fool, we were young, the future beckoned us. Now we grow old and grey and all we knew is forgotten there comes alive in the ash of today, memory! a god who revives us! the apple trees we climbed as a boy the caress on our necks of a summer breeze. Come back and give us those days when passion drove us to break every rule. We weren't bad, but good! May our preachers find us the courage still to sin so and win so! and win so! a life everlasting. "Reverie and Invocation" by William Carlos from Collected Poems |
