COLLECT OF THE DAY

O God, the strength of all who put their trust in you: Mercifully accept our prayers; and because in our weakness we can do nothing good without you, give us the help of your grace, that in keeping your commandments we may please you both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

REFLECTION

 Celebrate the Happiness of Another

In The Kabbalah of Envy Rabbi Nilton Bonder explains a practice that will reinforce love in any situation. "Yiddish has a very special verb, unknown to most other languages: farginen. It means to open space, to share pleasure; it is the exact opposite of the verb to envy. While envy means disliking or resenting the happiness of others, farginen means making a pact with another individual's pleasure or happiness."

The next time you hear about someone else's good fortune, notice your reaction. Do you find yourself having to force a smile and giving rather insincere congratulations? Do you ask, "Why didn't this happen to me?" It is in such moments that many relationships start to deteriorate, so it is important to be able to practice farginen with another person instead.

"To develop the ability to farginen," Bonder advises, "we must first recall from our own experience those moments when we were able to do it. And if this feeling was sincere, it will certainly have been felt with great happiness, a kind of catharsis. Every time we are able to celebrate someone else's happiness, we will, by definition, have greater reason to celebrate ourselves. In this way, we can widen our chances for enjoying life, freeing ourselves from the imprisonment of our own luck. Farginen sets up networks of confidence that enrich life."

ANNOUNCEMENTS

GRACE CHURCH ANNUAL PARISH MEETING

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2011 at 10:45am

FOR ANNUAL REPORT CLICK HERE (limited copies will be available at the meeting)

Services will be 8:00am & 10:00am

This year the Annual Parish Meeting will again be structured to provide an opportunity for members to come together in small groups to discuss ministry and mission, as well as to gather in plenary for reports from the rector and wardens and to vote.  To make it possible for the widest-possible attendance at the meeting, our Sunday services will be at 8:00 and 10:00am, with the meeting taking place at 10:45am.  Childcare will be available through 12:30pm so that parents and teachers can attend this important gathering.

Please remember that while the Annual Meeting is open to all, only pledging members are eligible to vote.  A list of those eligible to vote, minutes from the Annual Parish Meeting of 2010, and the report of the Nominating Committee will be posted at the entrance of the church beginning January 30, 2011.

It's not too late to  pledge.

Can't find your pledge materials?   The pledge card is  available online (CLICK HERE); just print it out and mail to us, or place in the offertory plate on Sunday. There's also a very helpful Question & Answer sheet that answers many of the questions we receive concerning pledging, and,  for those who would like to make their pledge payments via scheduled credit card payments or electronic bank debits (e-pledge), the authorization forms are also on line.
