COLLECT OF THE DAY

Most high, omnipotent, good Lord, grant your people grace to renounce gladly the vanities of this world; that, following the way of blessed Francis, we may for love of you delight in your whole creation with perfectness of joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

REFLECTION
The people of God are not the only creatures capable of praising God, after all. There are also wolves and seals. There are also wild geese and humpback whales. According to the Bible, even trees can clap their hands. Francis of Assisi loved singing hymns with his brothers and sisters- who included not only Brother Bernard and Sister Clare, but also Brother Sun and Sister Moon. Francis could not have told you the difference between the "sacred" and the "secular" if you had twisted his arm behind his back. He read the world as reverently as he read his Bible. He did not know where to draw the line between the church and the world. For this reason among others, Francis is remembered as a saint. The House of God stretches from one corner of the universe to the other. Sea monsters and ostriches live in it, along with people who pray in languages I do not
speak, whose names I will never know. .

The Church School will be collecting donations of supplies for the Hi Tor Animal Shelter - they have more than 140 cats at the moment and are in desperate need of both dry & wet cat food and cat litter. There will be a basket in the narthex for your offerings.
FALL PARISH RETREAT/QUIET DAY
Spiritual, centered, aware, socially conscious, intentional, open, thoughtful, active are all adjectives most progressive Christians would be flattered to have applied to them. But "religious"?  What's that?  Come spend a day apart, reflecting on and untwisting the modern world's skepticism at the odd and mysterious vows required of the "religious".  You just might find that ancient and contemporary twists on the disciplined life fit quite nicely with the spiritual and centered life of faith that can be so elusive to those of us who have chosen to live our lives well beyond the monastery walls. The Grace Church Fall Retreat/Quiet Day for 2010 will be held at Marydell in Upper Nyack on Saturday, October 23 from 9:00am until 3:30pm.  The retreat will be led by Sr. Carol Bernice of the Community of the Holy Spirit, an Episcopal community of nuns in New York City and Brewster, NY.  There is a $35 registration fee ($10 for students); financial help is available if needed - just ask.  Breakfast and lunch will be served.  All are welcome.  We hope you will join us.  Watch for registration forms soon, or send us an email at parishoffice @gracechurchnyack.org

See the October Messenger for directions.  Questions, call Win at 358-0552.

Just like the U.S. government, occasionally we need to get a complete and up-to-date count of just who we are.  In the narthex you'll find "Parishioner Information Profile" sheets to be filled out and returned to us by All Saints Day (October 31). Please take one, complete it and return - by mail/office drop-off/collection plate - as soon as possible.   Thank You!  SEND AN EMAIL if you'd like the form sent to you.
