THE COLLECT FOR SUNDAY

O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
REFLECTION
The most exemplary nature is that of the topsoil.  It is very Christ-like in its passivity and beneficence, and in the pentrating energy that issues out of its peaceableness.  It increases by experience, by the passage of seasons over it, growth rising out of it and returning to it, not by ambition or aggressiveness.  It is enriched by all things that die and enter into it.  It keeps the past, not as history or as memory, but as richness, new possibility.  Its fertility is always building up out of death into promise.  Death is the bridge or the tunnel by which its past enters its future.

Wendell Berry in Recollected Essays 1965-1980 (North Point Press, 1981)

CONFIRMATION REDUX: AN ALL-PARISH REFRESHER COURSE

Whether one was confirmed 50 years ago or 5 years ago or is just now considering joining the Episcopal Church - all of us need to review the basics from time to time. Come join in with the rest of your parish community as we prepare to corporately renew our Baptismal Covenant during the Bishop's visit to Grace Church on June 6. From April 25 through May 30 the All Parish Forums (10:10-10:50am each Sunday) will be dedicated to the exploration (and explanation) of Anglican/Episcopal history, our view of scripture and ministry, our unique styles of spirituality, and our rich tradition of liturgy and music. All are invited and encouraged to attend! A note to those considering confirmation, reception or reaffirmation in the Episcopal Church: This series is part of the Adult Confirmation Course for this year. If you wish to be baptized, confirmed, received, or to reaffirm your vows or are even contemplating one of these actions, this class is for you. Please contact the clergy to let them know of your interest and they will be happy to talk with you about these steps which take place at the Bishop's visit once each year.

FINAL HELPING HANDS

Our last time to host Helping Hands will be on Saturday, April 24, Sunday, April 25 and Monday, April 26. The Senior Youth Group has volunteered to provide dinner on the 25th but we need volunteers to cook and serve dinner on the 24th and 26th, and overnight supervisors for each date. This is your last chance to help with this ministry until next year. The sign-up sheets are on the bulletin board in the narthex, or you can email Charlie Cross at cjcross3ny@yahoo.com.

OUR TWELFTH SEASON AT BOSCOBEL!  SUNDAY, JUNE 27

If you have attended any of the past eleven performances at the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, you know the setting on the great lawn can't be matched and the actors give their all, rain or shine.   This year's play, The Taming of the Shrew, is a playfully provocative battle of the sexes pitting the shrewish Katharina against the fortune-seeking Petruchio. The Fellowship Commission has already reserved 55 seats for our Grace Church family and friends. So mark your calendars for the 6:00pm performance on Sunday, June 27. Details will follow in the next Messenger and reservations will be accepted beginning in May.

PARTING THOUGHT

 KEEPING QUIET

Now we will count to twelve
and we will all keep still.

For once on the face of the earth
let's not speak in any language,
let's stop for one second,
and not move our arms so much.

It would be an exotic moment
without rush, without engines,
we would all be together
in a sudden strangeness.

Fishermen in the cold sea
would not harm whales
and the man gathering salt
would look at his hurt hands.

Those who prepare green wars,
wars with gas, wars with fire,
victory with no survivors,
would put on clean clothes
and walk about with their brothers
in the shade, doing nothing.

What I want should not be confused
with total inactivity.
Life is what it is about;
I want no truck with death.

If we were not so single-minded
about keeping our lives moving,
and for once could do nothing,
perhaps a huge silence
might interrupt this sadness
of never understanding ourselves
and of threatening ourselves with death.
Perhaps the earth can teach us
as when everything seems dead
and later proves to be alive.

Now I'll count up to twelve
and you keep quiet and I will go.

Pablo Neruda (1904-1973), "Keeping Quiet"
