FOOD FOR THOUGHT

sunrise

Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself:

I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today.

I can choose which it shall be.

Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.

GOT THE BLUES?

Do you frequently feel emotional? Do you have unexplained mood swings or drops in energy? Do you wonder why your body seems so imbalanced? Read below to learn about four possible reasons you might be feeling like you're in a funk, and how to beat those blues!

REASON # 1: YOUR THYROIDGetting thyroid checked

The thyroid regulates body temperature, skin, hair, metabolism, energy levels and more.

When the thyroid is imbalanced it can affect the mood causing depression,  a feeling of hopelessness, and fatigue.

The thyroid can become imbalanced for many reasons including: stress, an iodine deficiency, toxins such as heavy metals, food allergies, pregnancy, exposure to too much chlorine and so much more.

The best bet is to have your thyroid levels checked to determine exactly what your body needs, but here are some tools from our medicine cabinet to boost thyroid function:

Dulse Flakes: Seaweed contains a large amount of natural minerals and iodine, key for thyroid regulation.

Coconut Oil: Coconut Oil is also great for the skin and hair and it has been said to increase the metabolism.

Shower Filter: A huge stress for the thyroid is chlorine. We are exposed to gallons of chlorine in our own showers and to make matters worse, that chlorine is hot, which makes it even more potent. Filter out the chlorine and your thyroid will thank you.

REASON # 2: YOUR LIVER

The liver is an organ key for everyday survival. It is a main player in digestive function, detoxification and hormone production. When it becomes overloaded it can cause irritability, indigestion, headaches, hormone imbalances, hot flashes and more.

Stress, exposure to toxins, allergies, alcohol, caffeine and many other factors can cause a liver imbalance. As always, a thorough evaluation will help determine your individual needs, but here are some useful suggestions.

Phytoganix: Leafy greens are a great way to flood the liver with nutrients and to help the liver to detoxify on its own.

Detox Foot Bath: Helps to remove heavy metals and cleanses the kidneys, liver, lympathic system, urinary tract, and much more in a safe and noninvasive manner.

Quantum Cleanse: Help your body to rid itself of toxins through this cleansing blend of fibers, and natural herbal remedies.

REASON #3:  YOUR STRESS

Tension Headache

Yes, you have heard it before.  Stress can deplete the body of minerals, create a hormonal imbalance, cause blood sugar spikes and dips, and cause weight gain.  There are many ways to help to balance stress- much of it depends on whether the body is stressed from toxins and/or diet, or if it is related to lifestyle.  Here are a few suggestions to reduce stress:

Rescue Calm:   A homeopathic remedy to help stress and tension melt away.

Max Stress B -Easily-absorbed B-Vitamins that help strengthen your body's resistance to, and recovery from, stress.

Mindful Balance  :  A mini EAV session and flower essence consultation to help you determine- and address- the underlying causes of your physical and emotional stress. Call us for more information-212-245-3129.

REASON #4- YOUR DIETfruits and vegetables

Diet plays a bigger role in the body than just weight loss. It also plays a role in mood. If you skip meals, eat refined sugars or expose your body to allergens, you end up on an emotional rollercoaster.

Avoid "Trigger" Foods: The best suggestion is to find out what you are allergic to either through Electrodermal screening, or the Alcat food allergy test that we do at Mindful Health.

Eat RegularlyEat a small meal every 3-4 hours, and don't skip meals! Also, try to eliminate sugar, and refined carbohydrates like white flour and white rice.

Eat Whole Foods:  Avoid foods that are processed, or have ingredients that you don't recognize or can't pronounce.  Your body- and mind- will thank you!

Women snoozing on work desk

Question:

I usually experience a mid-day slump at around

2 or 3 o'clock in the afternoon.  What can I do for energy, besides hitting the vending machine or drinking coffee, to make it through the day?

1-Make sure you are hydrated. One of the leading causes of exhaustion is dehydration. The moment you are thirsty you are actually dehydrated. You should drink at least 2 liters of water per day, especially if you consume caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic and it draws water out of the body.

2-Try to eat every 3 1/2 -4 hours so that your blood sugar doesn't drop. Oftentimes a sugar dip can cause fatigue.

3-Incorporate a snack with some protein and or a healthy fat. Some ideas: Apple with 1 tblps of almond butter, avocado and 1 serving brown rice crackers, 2 ounces of goat cheese and some berries.

4-Move your body! Take a walk. The circulation and change of environment can do wonders for the body. Even if you only have 10 minutes, take a break out of your office!

5-Breathe! Many times fatigue can come from lack of oxygen to the brain. When we are stressed we lose focus of our own breath. Take 10 deep breaths and make sure you slowly exhale. Take notice if you breathe from your chest or your belly, when you breathe from your chest your breaths are more shallow.

One note-if you have food allergies or digestive issues you can feel tired after eating. If this sounds like you then you might need a more thorough evaluation.
