Shaklee's Sports Nutrition Heritage
Adventures
For years, Shaklee has studied the diets of elite athletes and has developed products with high scientific standards. This research and development has translated into dietary recommendations and high performance nutritional products for elite athletes and explorers as well as recreational athletes. Shaklee has been privileged to be a significant contributor to many landmark expeditions and record-breaking achievements throughout the world.
LIFE Books "The Greatest Adventures of all Time", published by Time Inc. Home Entertainment, contains 25 inspiring adventures of exploration and record-breaking accomplishments. Shaklee products were involved in the seven following adventures.
The Daedalus Project (1988): Shaklee's 'Performance' was developed as the sole "fuel" for the Greek Olympic cyclist, Kanellos Kanellopoulos, who provided the pedal power for the Daedalus aircraft. The 72 mile human powered flight from Crete to the Greek mainland set three world records for human powered flight, a feat equivalent to two back-to-back marathons. Performance (Shaklee's electrolyte drink) provided easy-to-absorb muscle fuel and quickly replaced the pilot's lost fluids.
Jacques Cousteau - Cousteau Society: This pioneer in ocean exploration founded the Cousteau Society. Cousteau chose Shaklee's safe biodegradable, non-toxic, effective cleaning products for his high-tech research vessels, Calypso and Alcyone, to ensure that no harm would be done to the environment he so loved. Cousteau led 55 ocean expeditions from Alaska to Antarctica, including a search for Atlantis in the Aegean Sea. Shaklee also sponsored the magazine for children, Dolphin Log.
Will Steger's North Pole Expeditions: Shaklee has been a part of Will Steger's history-making expeditions for over two decades. In 1986, after a 56 day trip, the Steger International Polar Expedition became the first to reach the North Pole by dogsled without resupply (meaning they carried everything they needed with them - over 3 tons of supplies). In 1997, Steger travelled solo without the use of sled dogs or resupply. TransAntarctica Expedition: Shaklee was the official sponsor of high energy foods for the 1989-90 TransAntarctica Expedition in which Will Steger led a team of men on a 3,741 mile dogsled expedition across Antarctica. This was the first unmechanized traverse of Antarctica. International Arctic Project: In 1995, the first official dietary study of Arctic explorers was supported by Shaklee nutrition. In this dogsled expedition, Will Steger's team was the first to cross the Arctic from Russia to Canada via the North Pole in a single season. This was a 3 month, 1,000 mile trip. This expedition had team members pulling their own weight for much of the trip. Shaklee supported environmental education projects for children in both the TransAntarctica Expedition and International Arctic Project. Mount Everest Expeditions: Shaklee has helped a number of record-breaking Everest expeditions reach the top of the world, including the 1st American to scale the mountain without supplemental oxygen. In support of the American Himalayan Foundation, co-founded by Sir Edmund Hillary, Shaklee has planted over a million trees in the Himalayas to help protect the environment and offset global climate change. | Voyager is now kept at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington |
Voyager non-stop around the world flight (1986) Shaklee served as the official nutrition consultant to Jeana Yeager and Dick Rutan, the daring pilots who powered the first non-stop (9-day) airplane flight to circumnavigate the globe without refuelling. |
