World of Works - Door of Faith by Don Harris

Ever since the advent of modern Christian faith, we Christians have slowly and inadvertently allowed an error to be inserted into our thinking. Ever since Martin Luther, revolting against the Catholic Church, wrote in the margins of his Bible the words "by faith alone", modern theologians have been reluctant to say anything about "works" - regardless of what the Bible may clearly define as a Christian's duty in the world. Both sides of the argument are constantly bolstered by cliché slogans derived from misapplied scripture.

Although it may be true that some theologians attempt to teach that we are "saved by works alone", I have never experienced this doctrine stated as such.  I found, when I looked into the Bible, that faith without works, literally, does not exist.

How can this Biblical clear point of view and inarguable literal reference to works being an essential part of our salvation be reconciled without compromising to the point of condoning the false notion that acts of righteousness will one day outweigh our misdeeds and sins?

FAITH ALONE?

In order to understand exactly what motivated Martin Luther, let's turn back a page or two of our church history. The Catholic Church arbitrarily applied penance to the forgiveness of sins, requiring that suppliants repeat certain phrases over and over again.  In some cases monetary offerings were requested for "spiritual favors" and forgiveness of sins. Martin Luther (in my opinion) overreacted. The idea of salvation by faith alone(if we must add the word "alone") simply does NOT exist in Scripture. As a matter of fact, the nearest reference to "faith alone" is found in the book of James, "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone." (2:17)

Could it be any clearer that faith without works is dead "being alone"? When will the modern church face this scriptural, doctrinal reality? No, we are not saved by works alone - but, neither are we saved by faith alone!

FAITH IS WORK!

John 6:29, "Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent."

Yes, a long time ago, the church became "hamstrung" by the false doctrine that we are saved by faith alone and this foundational idea has continued to permeate the faith and practice of modern Christians around the world. The people called "Jehovah's Witnesses" have long been criticized on works and faith because they believe that knocking on doors and witnessing to people will get them into heaven.  They are often criticized by people accusing, "They believe that their works will save their souls."

I think we would do well to answer the question asked by James:

James 2:20, "But wilt thou know, O vain man, [a man devoid of such works] that faith without works is dead?"

It is as if he is asking us to turn and view our doctrine from a different standpoint. If faith requires works to be true faith, and our lives exemplify essentially no works at all, doesn't that fact expose our empty faith?

I submit that this piece of information is our signpost.  This evidence should be a glaring neon sign that our faith is nonexistent!

When we examine our lives and find no apparent differences -not necessarily differences between us and the worst person we know - we will find clear and inarguable distinctions in our before and after lives.  In spite of our claims to have been filled with the Spirit of God, we are without evidence of salvation. According to the Scriptures we may no longer use the excuse, "Salvation is not of works."

A BIBLICAL WARNING

The Biblical writers had a particular purpose for everything they wrote. Along with faith without works Jesus taught us that we have works without faith; and of this the Bible gives us warning! Many people raised in Christian households by Christian parents, were taught the difference between right and wrong.  Many having learned the difference between right and wrong by painful experiences have developed a "preferred" lifestyle that just so happens to conform to the Commandments of God. Many, realizing the dangers, confusion, penalties, and miseries of particular sins, have merely chosen not to engage in them.

Most of us are never tempted to commit murder but this does not make us a child of God. We would never think of committing adultery - for love of our spouse, love of our family, or even love of our fellow man and his rights, but this does not mean we are born again. Many of us simply prefer "Christian atmospheres" and the pleasure of the acquaintance of "good people".

From its pages, the Bible shouts this warning, "By compliance to the law shall no flesh be justified"! The Scriptures clearly teach that we enter into our covenant by faith; however, it is a mistake to think that because we have faith, no works are necessary. Have we become so deluded to believe that Jesus is our Lord, Boss, Guide and Overseer yet our obedience is merely voluntary?

When I read in the Apocrypha the story of Tobit, I was astounded.  His narrative described his

almsgiving and kindnesses extended to his fellow man. He explained these alms and good deeds would mark eternally the judgment of his life.

Nehemiah prayed, "...remember me, oh my Lord for good."

These men were under no delusion that their good deeds should outweigh their evil ones in order to enjoy eternal life.

HOWEVER,  once a person is "in the faith" works are vitality important!

The laziness of mankind translated, converted, and carried into Christian life has been facilitated and even encouraged by the perceived axiom, "We are saved by faith alone". The book of Sirach (also in the Apocrypha) makes numerous references to good works ensuring a pleasant outcome at the time of judgment.

And to those who agree with our near-contemporary church fathers who removed the Apocrypha from the Bible and therefore believe it has no bearing upon "new testament" Christians, consider for a moment that our Lord Jesus Christ confirms the doctrine of faith AND works in almost every parable. He concludes the Sermon on the Mount with these red words in Matthew 7:21-27: "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.  Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.  And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:  And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it."

It is clear that hearing only (that is, believing) is not enough! The words, "...not every one" should haunt us.  What do they mean? Not every one except those who believe? Those who hear? Those who do?  It is only those who, "...hear AND do the will of my Father..." whose house is built upon a rock will be safe!

Faith may open the door, but we should not forget that this door opens into world of works; and if works are not a part of your life, it shows that you have never stepped through this door.

  EmailNOTES TO DON & PAM
I must confess how the Lord in His own way and at His own time is building me up in the knowledge of Him. Not according to man's understanding but ONLY Him knows what He is doing. Your ministry is helping 'honest' people around the world. But for those who believe they are ALWAYS right, well...I don't know...My warm greetings. Shalom (LAGOS, NIGERIA)

God bless you and Don, for what you all do for GOD. (PA)

I was looking for the Red Letter Edition Live dated 9/25/11 and tuned in to TRI.TV (right now) although I have heard this one 9/18/11, I'm listening again. I hear Don talking about his commission to tell us the truth and how much he loves all of us listening, but he will not compromise the truth by saying what we want to hear and that's hard. I'm so thankful that he doesn't! But, I know at times it is very hard for both of you and I pray that you be strengthened and preserved. (TX)

I listened to your radio interview at the beginning of Sabbath. It was revealed to me that I left Bible based non-denominational churches because I was "smart".  I went to a Pentecostal church. I didn't "feel" what I was understanding from the scripture that was being taught in non-denominational church; so, I thought I would "feel" it there at a Pentecostal church. Ya know, I now realize that I have to admit I faked things in that church because I was fearful of being accused that I wasn't saved!!! Yes, I confess that I "fell slain in the spirit" just so others around me would not question my stand on believing in God. At the end of your interview, you said that there are those who preach that it's all about relationship with Jesus. This is true...but why won't anybody preach that I CAN'T HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM, WITHOUT OBEDIENCE! (The Ten Commandments) We can NEVER hope to be saved, or Hear His voice without obedience first. I just turned 39 and I guess at this point I will quit being angry for being lied to most of my life. I have to be honest with myself as well. I am to blame for "going along" with it too. I hope I spend the rest of my life in Truth and remain faithful. Much Love 2 U @ TRI (AK)

I listened to the portion of the "Last Things" conference with Jesse Lee. What a wonderfully good and loving spirit we were introduced to. I just can't thank you enough for that. Guess that's all. (ID)

We, also, did not sight the New Moon from St. Charles, MO, last night... with the sky being almost completely overcast.  At sunset, We went out for a few minutes just in case Yehovah decided to part the clouds and allow us to see His New Moon.  It was not to be.  Even if the sky would have been clear, the lag time here was only about 31 minutes, so we would not have been able to sight the New Moon anyway, unless, of course, Yehovah decided He wanted us to see it.  That's why we take the time to look up, even though the calculations point to not possible.  After all, who knows the day or time? We'll be out at the end of the day, today, looking for the New Moon.  We have clear blue to gaze into, so we should easily sight the New Moon of Shouting. (MO)

I am so glad to find a ministry that is addressing truth. I was raised (a PK) in the Church of God. I had turned away from church and religion years ago, being disappointed in so many things. Over the last few months, I have felt the call to re-read my bible in search for the truth. As have recently repented and am beginning anew and finding a real relationship with Him, I struggle with letting go and fully trusting in Him to provide all things. All I need from you is your prayers. Thank you so much! (TX)

Just a short note to let you know what a Great Ministry you have. After July 31st I began meditating on everything that was said. I don't of know anything special was said to get me thinking about this, but it did. My thoughts went to Knowledge and Truth...How the desire for Knowledge and Truth got Eve and the rest of us into so much Misery. I know Knowledge of some things are good & others things are bad news. Especially Spiritual Knowledge. It seems the more Prideful we become ...Kinda like eating Pop Corn...We eat a little bit & want more...and the more puffed up we become. I guess this is called Pride.  You know kinda like...I know it all already, so don't try to tell me anything. I have seen and heard this over & over on television and from the pulpits many, many, times... I have also been guilty of this myself ..and it really accomplishes nothing of  lasting value.

On the other hand, we have Truth!  I can't,  for the life of me, understand why people can't tell the difference between Knowledge & Truth.  I know this is why Jesus said.  "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no man comes to the Father except by Me."  He didn't say Knowledge is the way to come. So, it seems to me that the way we are to walk and to live is connected by the Truth.  It's kinda like taking a bite of Rib Eye steak. That first bite the flavor hits you & it's so good...every chew there after has that same wonderful flavor...there is no need to keep looking for something better. There is nothing better than Truth. It constantly Nourishes & Satisfies what I need!

So, I want to Thank you both for giving me the Truth...Now, I can leave the Pride & Ego where they fall and move on the Way & Life in the Truth...Jesus will give me every day, to accomplish what "He" wants me to Do and Be...Many, many Thanks, Your Friend,(TX)

I appreciate you so much, I learned a lot from your ministry. Thanks a lot for the DVD Last Things, it's eye opening. Looking for the Good Sabbath Email  and The Red Letter Edition Live on the first day of the week. Thanking God for everything I wish you God's blessing to you. With love, (ONTARIO, CANADA)

I have been reading The Red Letters of Jesus, It is an ongoing working of my soul. I have been brought down to my knees more than once by our LORD'S questions. I have learned one thing you said for sure, HE will put us to the test ,even the same day and days later. I thought I for the first time seen men as men and not as trees. Well, I hate to admit this but, I failed my test. First chance I had to treat someone as I would want to be treated, I saw men as trees still. I have asked my LORD to please give me a second touch and I do believe He is a GOD of second chances! Thank you so much for sharing your revelations with the world. I am receiving my own revelations from our GOD, and its so wonderful, but, He does reveal things in me I never knew were there, and they are not pleasant. I know for the first time in my Christian life, I am starting to know my KING, and there aren't words to describe HIM befitting of OUR CREATOR. YOUR FRIEND IN CHRIST, (NM)

I am the daughter of [ThINKers]. I hear from them all about what is going on and have tried a couple of times to accompany them to a feast, and am very appreciative of all the work that Pam has done to accommodate me, just to find out that I can't make it. I will though soon. My mom has given me books, DVD's, etc. to help me learn all about the truth that we have been kept from. I tried to get your radio & TV stations on my older desk top computer to no avail, however, I now have a new laptop and I certainly haven't had the problems I had before. I did watch Don on the radio earlier, so maybe I've learned how to address the problems I had before and will now be able to watch and hear Don or some of his guests' he may have on the air. Thank you both for allowing the Holy Spirit to lead you, so you can help Gods' sheep grow in His Light and not man's. In Yeshua's Love (TX)

First off, thanks for continuing to set the record straight on behalf of God Almighty. It is so good to have a voice out there, to fill in the gaps in understanding the Faith more fully. I am sure I am not the only one in such a position! ...with that we pray that the dynamics of the ministry of TRI will continue to respond to the changes necessary to effectively reach out to this "Truth starved" world. May Yehovah bless you, lovingly (ALBERTA, CANADA)

Very nicely phrased perspective, Don.  We heartily agree with you about looking forward to leaving the ills of this world behind, and going forward to a far better life in a far better environment with our Creator when He wills our time here to end.  What is there worthwhile to cling to here in this transitory world?  May our time here help us prepare to enter a much higher level of learning and doing His will for us....forever. Be blessed in His continual presence. (ECUADOR)

NEW MOON CELEBRATION

New Moon 09/2011From ThINKers in Cle Elum, Washington:

I've seen the pictures of the new moons on your website so I've attached the first sighting of 6th month moon here in Cle Elum,  Washington, which was 9-1.  I scanned the sky on 8-31, but could see nothing.  There were a few clouds at the edges of the hilltops at the setting of the sun which probably occluded what may have been seen.  Telescopic Moon 3-19-11

The other picture is one I took through a telescope on March 19 of this year when the moon was supposed to be viewed so large.  It was magnificent. We have had beautiful weather through the month of August if you don't count the wind.  Wind is common here so we just deal with it.  The new earth is where we're looking forward to calling our home...and I'm counting on gentle breezes.
