Notes to Don & Pam:

Email

I enjoy your ministry late at night here in [Las] Vegas, Imp 68 years old, used to go to church when they weren't afraid to tell the truth.  Now they seek teachers to have their ears tickled. I hear my bible every day... and the message that GOD has just about had his fill of this whole mess! We as Christians have sat back and watched the Devil take our country away from us -- because Jesus said we were not to be part of this world.  All of these preachers that told this stuff have all fallen to the wayside -- false Prophets! Jesus said in Math 24:3 in the last days they will come saying that he is the Christ and mislead many!! I see it every day, preachers who claim Jesus as Lord to gain confidence, then draw the people to themselves and teach their own doctrines from hell.  KEEP PREACHING! (NEW - NV)

Thank you for today's program.  You are truly a brave man Don.  As [wife] and I are studying and asking for wisdom most each day the birth control question has been one that has come up.  I would also like to thank you for your "insight" on the tzit-tzit question.  I have gotten from your response and my own meditation (this is something I am learning how to do now) that tradition and clothing items will not keep the commandments for me.  First, we must learn and apply them to every aspect of our life. At any rate thank you all at Think Red Ink, it is an awesome way to unwind after work :) (OR)

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!  I went to a "Rosh haShanah" celebration Wed. nite at a local church here just to find out if people here are seeking the truth.  A rabbi was there and a teaching about the feast was given.  There were of course rabbinical teachings such as that Tishri 1 is the "New Year" and the reason for the blowing of the shofar-- which I know is not true. I hope to have a clear night in order to see that beautiful sliver of moon tonight.  It is such a blessing to know I have your ministry as a source of truth.  ....One of the reasons I appreciate your ministry is that my husband has been willing to hear your teachings on DVD ...  your Sabbath e-mail and the DVD really helped.  We have a long  way to go but progress is being made.  Pray for us.  Blessings always but especially now in these Holy Days (NM)

Please add me to your email list.  I love the ministry and enjoy it so much! Thank you! (NM)

I did want to thank you again for the Second Exodus DVD that came today. I am about to put it in the player right now. You asked a very good question in your last email to me. "why do you expect something ""hard"" from us" . I realized that that is how I ended both emails, with an expectation of being "corrected" or something. I didn't have a good honest reply, still don't, but can say that it is not due to anything the two of you project. I'm sure He will show me. I'm asking. HEY, if you are shout'n and blow'n tomorrow nite, hope you have a wonderful time. (ID)

Thanks for the update. I did find the material helpful last Sabbath. You guys are a real inspiration to me, (TX)

I first saw DON on GLC. I was getting you on Satellite, but I moved to Baltimore so I have to watch on the internet for now. You replied to my email about being canceled on GLC...I miss you on there. I used to get materials from you when I was in WV. You would send them in the mail. I pray you never stop doing what you are doing for the LORD, I know you won't. God Bless You Both (MD)

The Day of Atonement is Upon Us Again

First-Day night (Sunday night at evening) the Day of Atonement begins. Set aside this day for fasting, affliction, and time before the Lord YHVH.

What is your mind picturing when you think about your atonement? Many people misunderstand what atonement means. It is commonly confused with forgiveness or payment for sin.

In actuality, there is no payment for sin. (We discussed this in a former Sabbath Email.) The idea for payment of sin comes from an amalgamation of false doctrine ranging from "Eternal Security" to "Purgatory." One side claims sins are paid for, "past, present and future." The other side attempts to make money by releasing relatives from their "payment."

Though at least one of these ideas (and sometimes both of them!) is commonly preached from nearly every pulpit in America and beyond, there is not a shred of Scripture to bear out either idea. Rather the Scriptures teach exactly the opposite on both accounts!

THE APOSTLES ON ATONEMENT

Paul taught, "Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God." (Romans 3:25)

John writes in His first epistle, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1:9) and "... if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous...And he is the propitiation for our sins..."(2:1-3)

It is plain that the sins of the PAST are covered by propitiatory (temporary satisfying) action as well as the sins that are PRESENT; but, neither Paul nor John ever mentioned the sins of FUTURE.

The reason is simple. Propitiation cannot cover what has yet to be.

WHAT IS PROPITIATION?

Before we delve into the meaning of propitiation, let's consider for a moment the idea of prepayment for sin. How did this idea become so universal?

Prepayment for sin was not uncommon in Martin Luther's day. You may remember, church history recalls that the paying of "indulgences" was the subject that ignited the fire burning inside Martin Luther.  The flames resulted in the hammering of the 95 theses to the door of the Roman Church.

Actually, "indulgences" were sins - bought and paid for - before they were committed - IN ADVANCE!

Today, some Protestants still struggle with the theology of being forgiven in advance of judgment.  The result? It causes participation in sin that would never have been committed if forgiveness was not "assured" beforehand!

All this being said, how does propitiation (Greek hilasterion {hil-as-tay'-ree-on}) fit into our holy Day of Atonement?

In the Septuagint version of the Hebrew Scriptures the words "hilasterion"and "epikalupto" were used in conjunction to form the thought of a covering - a covering to facilitate the forbearance of judgment - and were later translated "mercy seat" or "favor covering."

WHAT DID HE SAY?

In plain language, the words were typified in the mercy SEAT -a covering (Kapereth {Hebrew} and epikalupto {Greek}) of the Ark of the Covenant. This covering was not only intended to keep safe the tablet of stone in the ark, but it also held the Law from public view (so-to-speak).

The Law in stone tablets condemned us who would otherwise have no communion with YHVH at all.

It turns out that the word "atonement" has nearly the same meaning: covering. The "Sunday School" teaching that atonement means at-ONE-ment has no validity at all! Atonement does not make us "at one" with the LORD.  The meaning, the purpose, of atonement is merely to cover our sinfulness ...UNTIL WE ARE EVENTUALLY AND FINALLY REDEEMED!

"... Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered." (Romans 4:7)

Commonly, it is thought that the "Christian" will never see the judgment throne of Messiah. This certainly would come as news to the Apostle who said, "...for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ ... So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God." (Romans 14:10-12)

Peter, too, was under the impression that the Lord Jesus would, "... judge the quick and the dead." (1 Peter 4:5) (Alive and dead? Yep, that covers us all!)

Even the words of Messiah Himself leave no room for doubt that even our speech will be judged one day: "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment." (Matthew 12:36) (Notice He did not add, "Except those of you who are Christians.")

Although we may have been forgiven and reconciled to our God, the Great Judge in this life, we have YET to be saved from destruction!

I know this is hard for the religious to hear; but, it is borne upon many Scriptures and sets as truth in the ears and hearts of Believers whose faith is rooted in truth.

Do I attempt to take away your assurance of salvation?

There is NO assurance other than the good graces of your Judge. If you refuse to place faith in your works alone to save you (and you should reject such a false notion!) why would you put confidence in your faith alone?

Contrary to what we may believe, we are not saved by faith. We are saved by GRACE.

While it is true that grace is imparted by faith, faith alone is NOTthe means of salvation. You see, when James asked, "... can faith save him?" The question demands that we answer, "NO!"

We have inherited a fallacy; that is, being "saved" by "unmerited favor." In other words, this would be that we are "saved" for no good reason.

I reject this idea! (Try telling your wife or husband that you love them and accept them for no good reason! It will not work!) Could we think that God has no reason to love us or save us but that He will anyway? Wrong! He will save us - because He loves us!

Nothing has changed. We are, as we have always been - dependent upon the love and power of God used on our behalf. This is otherwise known as GRACE.

THE DAY OF ATONEMENT

The Hebrew name for this day is Yom (Day) [of] Kippur (Covering). Notice the similarity of the Hebrew words "kappereth" and "kippur"? They are from the same root word meaning covering. "Kippur" is translated in the Old Testament as "atonements." (Maybe we should we call it the "Day of AtonementS"?)

In order to put us in the right frame of mind for atonement, Jehovah gave us a day of affliction. This is a day having no comforts - no food - no pleasure - no ease. We are, through physical deprivation, putting ourselves in the frame of mind of awaiting judgment.  We are to have hope (but, only hope) of our salvation.

So, what is wrong with living in full assurance of salvation?

Nothing! As long as that assurance comes from your trust in YHVH as a merciful and loving God and not because YOU have done something, said something, or have any sort of "contract" with Him - and certainly not because you merely "have faith."

I have heard preachers say from the pulpit, "I couldn't go to hell if I wanted to!" Although most people may never be so bold (or stupid) to say such a thing, we should remember that our salvation is based in LOVE! His love for us and not our love for Him! (Good thing - for that is severely lacking in many areas!)

Salvation is not due to our faith in Him either! (For that is proven daily to be weak as water!) Rather, it is due to the lone fact that He loved us and gave Himself for us.

The Day of Atonement is a day of humility and fear. Humility, because we do not deserve it - fear, because our forgiveness and atonement is well out of our own control. Humility and fear are the very characteristics that should show themselves predominant in our everyday lives and in our speech - and they should be found in our attitude about our own salvation as well!

On that great Day of Atonement coming in our future, we will wait in anxiety and fear. Our stomachs will growl - food that will have been placed on low priority. Our own comfort and convenience will be placed on hold, and our very lives will hang in the balance.

No one will be proud on that day. No one will have the assurances bragged about now.  Instead "Every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess ..."

I hope you know that your salvation is based in His love alone.  It is totally outside of your own will. Those who have "accepted Jesus" will one day (that great Day of Atonement) quake in fear!  Acceptance of Him will mean little.  Instead, your question will be, "Has He accepted me?"

SOMETHING TO DO ON THE DAY OF ATONEMENT

Perhaps while you afflict yourself this coming Day, you might read the following Scripture with a renewed sense of humility and appreciation for HIS salvation:

"And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;  Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air ... But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)  And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:  That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.  Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh ...at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:  But now in Christ Jesus ye ... are made nigh by the blood of Christ ... that he might reconcile both unto God ....  For through him we have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone..."
 (Ephesians 2:1-22)
